Summers chosen as BCSC teacher of the year

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The 2020 BCSC Teacher of the Year Award has been awarded to Melinda “Mindy” Summers, a language arts teacher at Central Middle School who is in her 21st year with the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp.

“I just want to say that I am absolutely humbled and blessed,” Summers said. “If I had every single person here that I need to thank for this award, then this room would be full to the brim. This community has been amazing to me, has been my family. … The world now, more than ever needs education, and I am so happy to be on the front lines, and I appreciate this so much.”

The award was announced at Monday’s board meeting, where Summers was honored and given an award plaque to keep. A second, continual plaque will be placed in the BCSC administration building. This is the first year BCSC has presented the award.

“We felt like we needed this process and to recognize a teacher of the year, because we have so many excellent, outstanding teachers,” said Teresa Heiny, assistant superintendent of human resources. She added that the award also enables teachers to participate in the Indiana Teacher of the Year Award program.
