Two matters will be addressed during a court hearing Monday for a local man accused of attacking and injuring Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers.
Justin C. Eddelman, 32, of 918 Lafayette Ave. will be given the opportunity to change his plea when he appears before Circuit Court Judge Kelly Benjamin at 2:45 p.m. Monday. His trial is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 27.
Eddelman is now being represented by Franklin attorney Daniel Vandivier, court officials said.
For the alleged attack against Myers, Eddelman is charged with battery with bodily injury to a public safety officer, a Level 5 felony, as well as two Level 6 felonies, resisting arrest and intimidation. If found guilty of all counts, Eddelman could receive up to 11 years in prison, as well as fines as high as $30,000.
Eddelman is accused of pushing Myers into a wall in the Bartholomew County Jail lobby on June 15, and kicking him in the left knee, according to a court affidavit. While Myers did sustain a minor injury, the sheriff told his staff he did not require additional medical attention.
The incident occurred just minutes after Eddelman entered the lobby and threatened Myers, although he did ask what the sheriff’s name was, a probable cause affidavit states. Myers was attacked after he came out from behind a locked door to ask Eddelman why he was making threats, according to the court document.
Beside the June incident, the second matter to be addressed during the hearing is a petition to revoke Eddelman’s probation. On Dec. 30, 2019, Eddelman received 547 days of probation in Benjamin’s court after pleading guilty to battery by bodily waste against a police officer.
According to court documents, Eddelman lunged at Columbus Police Officer Chad Lehman early last year and spat in his face while being taken into jail following a police scuffle.
