North’s Patel picks DePauw

Columbus North senior wide receiver Eshaan Patel has committed to continue his football career at DePauw.

Patel was a two-year starter for the Bull Dogs. He caught 12 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown this season in helping North to a 6-3 record and a Conference Indiana title.

Steward commits to Hanover

Danielle Steward hasn’t played softball for Hauser yet, but on Tuesday, she signed a letter-of-intent to compete in college.

Steward, a senior pitcher, signed to play softball at Hanover. She was planning to play for the Jets in the spring before the season was canceled because of COVID-19.

Steward transferred to Hauser from Indianapolis Lutheran last year. She did not pitch for the Saints as a sophomore in 2019, but batted .286 with six RBIs and five runs scored in 22 games.

Johnson named Jets MVP

Senior Hannah Johnson has been selected MVP of the Hauser volleyball team.

Marnie Schwartzkopf won the Mental Attitude Award, and Kenze Bostic was named most improved for the varsity. Stat leaders honored were Johnson (kills), Aunaka Wasil (assists), Bostic (blocks), Andie Clark (digs) and Adrianna Musillami (serve efficiency).

Kayden Miller was selected JV MVP. Mattie Foster won the JV Mental Attitude Award, and Dorie Shoaf was named JV Most Improved.

Essex named Hauser MVP

Ben Essex has been named MVP of the Hauser soccer team.

Adonah Riddle won the Most Improved Award, and Will Walters won the Best Mental Attitude Award. Cameron Scott won Most Goals scored, and Thomas Essex was named Best Defender.

Goecker reaches milestone

Trinity Lutheran senior Tyler Goecker went over the 1,000-point mark for his career Saturday in the Cougars’ 84-66 loss at Jac-Cen-Del.

Meanwhile, Jennings County senior Addyson Kent is closing in on the 1,000 plateau. She has 991 points going into Tuesday and Wednesday’s Scottsburg Tournament.

Teams switch tourneys

Two girls basketball teams that were scheduled to play in Eastern Greene’s Toby Yoho Classic, which was canceled, found other tournaments to play in. Trinity Lutheran will host its own tournament on Monday, and Brown County will compete in the Scottsburg Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Also, Columbus East’s girls basketball game scheduled for Tuesday at home against Madison will be a 5:30 p.m. junior varsity start, with the varsity to follow at around 7 p.m.
