HANOVER

Mrs. Ernestine Lillian Hunter Whittaker, age 94, of Hanover, Indiana formerly of Madison entered this life on April 28, 1926 in Madison, Indiana. She was raised in Hanover and was the loving daughter of the late Cassius Martin and Lillian Alice Beatty Hunter. She was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County and graduated from Madison High School in 1944. She earned a registered nursing degree from Indiana University in 1974. In 1988 she was united in marriage to Richard Whitaker. They had only two years of marriage together when Richard passed away on December 25, 1990. Ernestine retired at the age 82 from Hickory Creek Nursing Home after 15 years as a registered nurse. She had previously worked at the Madison State Hospital for 37 years as a registered nurse and helped as well at other nursing facilities when needed. She was a member of St. Stephens AME Church in Hanover. For many years she was involved in the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, gambling and traveling. Ernestine was a delightful lady always looking her best with a sweet smile to greet you with. Ernestine died on Monday, December 28, 2020, at 3:30 a.m. at the King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison, Indiana.

A LOVING FAMILY

Ernestine will be missed by her loving daughter, Donna Lynn Richey and her husband John of Seymour, Indiana; her loving grandchildren, Michael Richey, Darren Richey and his wife, Trish, Kristin Glenn and her husband, Walt, Zachary Jackson, and Debra Lee Carter and her husband, Donald; her adoring great grandchildren, Raelyn, Mychal and his wife, Emily, Onyx, Reese, J.C., Christopher, Troy, Sadie, Zoe, Latrice, Tonie, Trenton, Brehana, and Alexia; her great great grandchild, Grant; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, Cassius Martin “Cash” Hunter, died January 10, 1939, her mother, Lillian Alice Beatty Hunter, died September 5, 1970, her husband, Richard Lee Whittaker, died December 25, 1990, her son, John Gregory Jackson, died October 13, 1996, her grandson, Shawn Michael Andrew, her brothers, William Hunter, George Richard Hunter, died 1962, and Cassius William Hunter, died November 17, 1925, her sister, Estelle Holloway. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 2, 2021, at 4:00 p.m., officiated by, Dr. Bruce Rose, Rev. Johnny Edwards, and Rev. A.D. Reed at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre – Hanover Chapel, 278 East Main Street in Hanover, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Carmel Cemetery in Hanover, Indiana.
