William “Bill” A. Medaris, 80, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at 9:25 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2021 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Bill was born May 5, 1940, in Franklin, Indiana, the son of Wesley Dencil Medaris and Hilma Doyle Shonk. In May of 1993, he married Maudie V. Lovins.

Mr. Medaris served 4 years in the United States Navy and was a sergeant in the Indiana National Guard at Camp Atterbury. He was honorably discharged and retired after serving in Desert Storm. Bill worked as an Engine Test Cell Operator for Cummins Engine Company for over 20 years until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Medaris was a race fan and loved all types of racing. He was a member of the Stoney Lonesome Motorcycle Club and enjoyed listening to country music.

Survivors include his daughter, DeeDee (Scott) Haymaker of Florida, son, Barry (Tonia) Medaris of Columbus ; grandchildren, Benjamin Haymaker, Jacob Haymaker, Reagan Medaris, Christopher Zeigler; great-grandchildren, Bryson and Maddix Zeigler; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maudie; brother, Joe Medaris and sister, Jane Shephard.

A graveside inurnment will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Cemetery with Jeffrey Medaris officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
