Senior Awards Night held at JCHS

The 2021 Senior Awards Night was held at Jennings County High School Don Pelkey Auditorium on May 5.

Local and Jennings County Community Foundation Scholarships were given, with more than $367,000 awarded to around 60 seniors.

Twenty-one seniors were awarded the Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate. This is given to students who partner with the local business industry. Students must demonstrate professional skills and competencies through the school year to earn the certificate.

Nine JCHS seniors also received the Indiana College Core recognition. This allows students who earned 30 college credits in high school to transfer this block of credits to any public university in Indiana.

Cassidy Mull was the winner of the Lilly Endowment Scholarship. The scholarship pays for tuition and books at any Indiana college for four years.

"From the day I was granted the scholarship to now, I continue to struggle finding the right words to explain how I feel about receiving the Lilly Endowment Scholarship," Mull said. Moreover, I still find it hard to believe that I was the one chosen to receive this once in a lifetime opportunity, and for that, I feel incredibly honored and blessed. Not only has the Lilly Endowment Scholarship allowed me to attend the college of my dreams, but has also helped to ease any financial worries."

Senior Sydney Carson, who won three awards, said her 30 college credit hours will assist her in her quest for a degree in biochemistry at Purdue.

Max Brown, also attending Purdue, won the Pat O’Connor (former Jennings County Indy racecar driver). He said his scholarship will help him work towards his career in medicine.

JCHS guidance counselor Nikki Cardinal added, “I would like to congratulate all of our seniors who were recognized at Senior Awards Night. It is an honor to be able to see our students get recognized for all of their hard work both in and out of the classroom.

“All of these students are very deserving of the recognition they received. I would also like to thank our Jennings County community and other local supporters who donated money for scholarships I am incredibly proud to be a member of the Jennings County community!”
