COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested a local man accused of running across I-65 near the 72 mile marker in front of oncoming traffic at 6:54 p.m. Sunday.

Deputy Brandon Sellers was traveling southbound on I-65 when he observed a male run across the interstate.

Sellers pulled to the shoulder of the roadway in an attempt to make contact with the
subject but the man continued to run, jumping a fence near North County Road 250W and down a long gravel drive. Eventually, the man, identified as Michael Sample, 29, Columbus, complied with Seller’s orders to stop.

K9 Jari was deployed and located a capped syringe that is believed to belong to Sample, deputies said.
Sample was remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of public intoxication, possession of drug-related paraphernalia and obstruction of justice.

He remains in jail in lieu of $68,500 bond.
