Indiana State Police said they will release this afternoon the identity of a suspect who was shot after suspicious activity was reported in the 3300 block of Grove Parkway Sunday morning, and will also release the name of the Columbus Police officer who shot him.

The state police have been investigating the incident since early Sunday morning when a homeowner, who was on vacation, called 911 to report that an unknown person was on his property in the Forest Park residential neighborhood north of National Road at 4:05 a.m., police said.

A Columbus police officer arrived at the residence at about 4:12 a.m., state police said. At 4:13 a.m., the officer reported shots had been fired. The officer requested an ambulance which arrived approximately one minute later to provide medical care, and the Columbus Regional ambulance transported the adult male directly to Columbus Municipal Airport to a Lifeline helicopter. He was then airlifted to the Level 1 Trauma Center at IU Health Methodist Hospital where he remains in critical condition, state police said Monday.

The Indiana State Police took over the investigation at the request of the Columbus Police Department after it was learned an officer had discharged a weapon in the incident, investigators said. The officer was not injured.

An earlier Columbus Police Department news release said the officer arrived at the residence and located an armed suspect outside the home. A short time later, Columbus police said, a CPD officer discharged his firearm an undetermined number of times, striking the suspect.

A firearm was recovered at the scene of the shooting, investigators said.

The CPD officer was placed on administrative leave which is department protocol and was scheduled to be interviewed by Indiana State Police as part of the investigation, investigators said.

On Sunday morning, Columbus police, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s deputies and ISP detectives were congregating around an area near a shed on the homeowner’s property where the shooting was believed to have happened.
