Columbus police officers arrested a local man after he reportedly crashed into another vehicle and a house while attempting to evade officers on Tuesday night.

At approximately 11:40 p.m., CPD officers attempted to stop a dark-colored sport utility vehicle in the 1100 block of Pearl Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

A short time later, the vehicle began traveling at a high rate of speed and disregarded a nearby stop sign and struck an occupied vehicle near Eighth Street and Hutchins Avenue, Harris said. The occupants in the other vehicle were not injured, he said.

The SUV then crashed into the front porch of a residence in the 700 block of Hutchins Avenue, causing minor damage, Harris said.

Harris said the occupants of the SUV fled on foot, but the officers were able to apprehend the driver, Melvin G. Foree, 38, of Columbus.

Foree was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail with a 48 hour hold on the following preliminary charges:

— Bartholomew County warrant

— Leaving the scene of an accident

— Resisting law enforcement

— Reckless driving

— Driving while suspended with a prior conviction

Harris said the police investigation is ongoing.
