Feature Focus: Brian’s picks

1) Trent Moss & The Fairland Ramblers seem to have an appropriate name, given that the group normally is committed to some 150 shows per year. The country and southern rock ensemble will be in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Pixy Theatre, 111 S. Walnut St. in Edinburgh. The performance is expected to include the group’s new single "What is Country?" Information: theedinburghpixy.com

2) Mark your calendar: Former Republic special publications editor Paul Hoffman, a solid researcher and writer, will take you on a sometimes unbelievable tour of Columbus’ not-so-glorious past with his free presentation "Tales of Columbus" scheduled at 6 p.m. July 20 in the conference room of the Bartholomew County Public Library, 536 Fifth St. The talk is based upon his book "Wicked Columbus" highlighting "unsavory citizens, crime-ridden neighborhoods and tales of woe," as his promotional material states. Whether you’re reading the book or catching Hoffman’s off -the-cuff, wicked wit and storytelling, there’s no room for boredom. Information: mybcpl.org

3) OK, so maybe you can’t easily run off to a distant island to escape the stress or after-effects of COVID-19, or goodness-knows-what. But you can indeed escape to the nearby Brown County Playhouse where Eric Brown and the Parrotheads will present the Jimmy Buffett-inspired show "Wasting Away Again in Margaritaville" at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the venue at 70 S. Van Buren St. in Nashville. The website encourages ticket buyers to "wear your hula skirt, your Hawaiian shirt." In keeping with the theme, the venue will have specialty drinks available. Tickets are $24 and $25. Information: browncountyplayhouse.org
