After a one-year hiatus, Indiana high school football’s premier All-Star game is back.
The Indiana Football Coaches Association North-South All-Star Classic will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Anderson University’s Macholtz Stadium. Last year’s contest was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
One local player is slated to play in the game. Columbus East offensive lineman Hunter Nichalson is on the South roster.
Players reported to camp at Anderson on Tuesday to begin preparing for Friday’s game.
This will be the 54th game in the series, and it couldn’t get much closer. The South leads the series 27-26 after the North won the most recent game 25-24 in 2019.
Rutan selected North softball MVP
Sophomore Maddi Rutan, who led Columbus North to Conference Indiana, sectional and regional titles and its best season in school history, has been named the Bull Dogs’ MVP.
Lexi Heafner won the Bull Dog Award, and Emalee Heafner won Most Improved. Bailey King won the Clutch Award, and Meghan Waggoner won the Coach’s Award.
Meahl wins Hauser baseball MVP award
Senior Kobe Meahl, who helped lead Hauser to a share of the Mid-Hoosier Conference baseball title, has been named the Jets’ MVP.
Meahl also won the Finke Award, and Clayton West was named Most Improved Player. Koby Johnson won the Pitching Award, and Aaron Rork won the award for highest batting average.
Owen McIntyre won the JV highest batting average award.
Cougars’ Lauderbaugh headed to prep school
Lane Lauderbaugh, who led South Decatur to a sectional basketball title in 2020 and became the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder this season, will attend prep school.
The 6-foot-6 Lauderbaugh is headed to Moravian Prep in Hudson, North Carolina. He hopes the extra year of experience and improvement he makes there will lead to a Division I or II scholarship.
An Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State selection, Lauderbaugh led the Cougars with 25.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals this season, when they went 15-8 and won the Mid-Hoosier Conference title. He was named MVP of the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Classic after scoring 25 points to lead the East to an overtime win against the West.
