Hope woman’s nephew just misses final in 100 backstroke

The Brinegars aren’t the only Bartholomew County family with ties to this year’s U.S. Olympic men’s swim team.

Polly (Armstrong) Trotter of Hope has a nephew, Hunter Armstrong, who competed for the U.S. in the 100-meter backstroke on Sunday. Armstrong swam in the prelims on Sunday morning and the semifinals on Sunday night, missing a spot in the final by one-hundreth of a second.

Armstrong, 20, is a Dover, Ohio, native who began his college career at West Virginia before transferring to Ohio State last year. Trotter also originally is from Dover.

Known as the “Magic Man,” Armstrong introduced U.S. men’s and women’s swim team members at their training camp in Hawaii by doing card tricks. A card trick he did with NBC commentator Rowdy Gaines aired on the network on Sunday.
