Free concerts in Shelbyville coming Aug. 7, Sept. 11

Henry Lee Summer is shown at a concert earlier this summer.

SHELBYVILLE — The heart of rock and roll comes to Shelbyville’s Music in the Park series with a free concert from Huey Lewis tribute band Heart and Soul at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at Blue River Memorial Park, 725 Lee Boulevard.

Organizers say that the annual Music in the Park summer event series is a local family favorite and a chance for the city of Shelbyville to give back to its residents. Hoosier native rocker Henry Lee Summer also will present a concert Sept. 11.

Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for each two-hour show.

The Heart and Soul ensemble was formed in August 2018, assembled from northeast Ohio veteran musicians. Heart and Soul “recreates the experience of a Huey Lewis and the News concert, striving to duplicate the sights and sounds of the beloved group,” according to a news release.

Summer’s concert is expected to include a night of country, rhythm and blues, pop-rock and more. He has performed since 1982, with his best-known singles being “I Wish I Had a Girl,” which hit No. 1 on the mainstream rock chart, “Hands on the Radio,” “Hey Baby,” and “’Till Somebody Loves You.”

He released his debut album on Majestic Records in 1984 before signing with CBS and later with Epic Records. He played Farm Aid IV in 1990.

Back in June 2015, Summer played a free outdoor concert in downtown Columbus. He has sold more than a million discs or songs through the years, according to his website.
