Two arrested on drug-related charges after traffic stop

Staff Reports

Two people are in custody for several drug-related charges after their vehicle was stopped for a minor traffic violation early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 1 a.m. a CPD officer was patrolling the area of Eighth and Sycamore streets when he observed a vehicle that did not have an illuminated license plate. The officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Makaelin J. Wilks, 28, Columbus, and a passenger, Lisa G. Bryant, 53, address unavailable, said Sgt. Alyson Eichel, Columbus Police Department spokeswoman.

Officers learned that Wilks’ driving status was suspended, and that he had an outstanding warrant through Jackson County. During the investigation a CPD K9 responded, and alerted to the odor of narcotics coming from the vehicle, Eichel said.

While searching the vehicle officers found two straws containing methamphetamine underneath the driver seat, and a piece of aluminum foil with a burnt substance in the center console. Officers searched a bag belonging to Bryant and found pills and a Suboxene strip, along with a glass pipe in the vehicle where she was sitting, Eichel said.

Wilks and Bryant were both taken into custody, and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail. While at the jail, officers locate two small bags that Bryant had concealed in her clothing, Eichel said. One bag contained a gray, powdery substance that tested positive for fentanyl/methamphetamine, and one bag consisted of a crystal-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Wilks and Bryant were held at the jail on the following preliminary charges,

Wilks:

Driving while suspended with a prior conviction

Bryant:
