COLUMBUS
Velma R. Gearries, 92, a resident of Columbus, Indiana, passed from this life at 5:56 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2022, at her home.
Mrs. Gearries was born in Bartholomew County, Indiana, December 31, 1929, the loving daughter of Ralph and Ruth Swango Rutan. In July 1947, Velma married Norman E. Gearries; he preceded her in death September 26, 1984.
Mrs. Gearries grew up in Jonesville and she worked at the Roviar Shirt Factory and retired from Como Plastics. She worked in manufacturing for 51 years and never missed a day of work. She was of the Pentecostal faith, and she loved her grandkids very much. Her highlight of her day was to enjoy the good weather while sitting on her front porch.
Mrs. Gearries is survived by her children, Ronald (Cheryl) Gearries of Columbus, Glen (Lana) Gearries of Columbus, Larry Gearries of Columbus, Debra (Charlie) Riff of Clifford, and Patricia Patterson of Columbus; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Margie Jewell of Columbus; brother, Mavin Rutan of Columbus; and her faithful companion, Liz.
Mrs. Gearries was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Ruth Rutan; her son, Donald Gearries; a daughter, Teresa Marie Gearries; two brothers; and two sisters.
A private family service will be held in Section 79 at the Garland Brook Cemetery; Pastor Christopher Rutan will officiate. She will be laid to rest next to her husband following the service.
