Jared Slocum II // Columbus North senior wrestler

Slocum won two matches Saturday to capture the 182-pound division and help lead the Bull Dogs to a runner-up finish in the Conference Indiana Tournament.

His performance last week: “I was pretty happy with it. Those matches were definitely harder than I’ve had the rest of the season. Both of those matches were against kids who were in the 195-pound class and dropped down, so they were a little heavier than me.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “Our team will get ready together. About five matches before, I’ll start getting warm so I’m not too cold or stiff before I go out on the mat.”

Favorite drink: “Water. It makes conditioning and practice a lot easier.”

Favorite food: “Anything chicken-based”

Favorite class: “My environmental class”

Favorite sports team: “Ohio State wrestling”

Favorite athlete: “Jordan Burroughs”

Role model: “My father (Jared Slocum).”

Best advice: “Our coach will usually say in practice, ‘Get used to being comfortable while being uncomfortable.’”

Athletics goal: “First at state is always kind of the goal.”

If you could travel anywhere: “The state of Washington. A lot of the hills and the nature around there seems pretty nice.”

Ellie Proffitt // Columbus East senior swimmer

Ellie Proffitt

Proffitt won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly and swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay team Saturday to lead the Olympians to a fourth-place finish in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet.

Her performance last week: “I was really happy with it. I was definitely a little nervous going in, but I just tried to stay confident with the whole thing.”

Do you do anything special to prepare? “Just being around the team, I try to stay calm. I just mentally try to stay in a good place.”

Favorite drink: “Dr. Pepper”

Favorite food: “Sushi”

Favorite class: “Ocean Science”

Favorite sports team: “I watch the Colts because of my family.”

Favorite athlete: “Katie Ledecky”

Role model: “My mom (Kathleen Proffitt)”

Best advice: “As long as you’re honest and true to who you are and what you do, what you need will come to you.”

Athletics goal: “To keep training really hard and place really well in sectional.”

If you could travel anywhere: “Hawaii. I love the beach.”
