East rallies for OT win

ST. LEON — Trailing by 14 points entering the fourth quarter Thursday night, Columbus East rallied to send the game to overtime, then pulled out their fourth consecutive victory, a 60-56 triumph at East Central.

The Olympians (6-13) trailed 20-9 after one quarter, 26-15 at halftime and 38-24 after three periods. East then outscored the Trojans 22-8 in the fourth quarter and 14-10 in overtime.

Will Rieckers scored 24 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead the Olympians. Zane Moravec had nine points, and J.T. Kuhlman added eight.

BOYS SWIMMING

Locals positioned to qualify

Columbus North’s Daniel Utterback and Columbus East’s Misha Machavariani and two North relay teams put themselves in position to qualify for the Boys Swimming State Finals with top qualifying times in Thursday’s North Sectional preliminaries.

Utterback had the fastest-qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle (47.91 seconds), and Machavariani was tops in the 500 freestyle (4:59.36). The Bull Frogs were fastest in the 200 freestyle (1:32.84) and 400 freestyle (3:23.47) relays.

Only the winners and others meeting the state standard in Saturday afternoon’s finals automatically qualify for next weekend’s state meet. If spots remain, the next-best times from around the state are added until a full field of 32 in each event is reached.

The Olympians qualified second in the 200 medley relay (1:44.37). East’s Dathan Wolf broke his own school record in qualifying third in the 100 backstroke (53.79).

North’s David Fry qualified third in the 100 butterfly (53.93), and Pratt Badve qualified third in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.36).

Diving begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. Swimming finals and consolations start at 1 p.m.

GYMNASTICS

North wins tri meet

SEYMOUR — No. 10-ranked Columbus North won a tri meet at Seymour. The Bull Dogs scored a 107.45 to 103.1 for Bloomington South and 99.05 for Seymour.

Reese Euler and Emily Moore each won two individual events and finished first and second in the all-around.

Euler won the vault (9.55) and beam (9.4) and finished second on the bars (9.05) and floor (9.6) on her way to victory in the all-around with a 37.6. Moore won the bars (9.6) and floor (9.8) and placed second on the vault (9.2) and fourth on the beam (8.65) in taking second in the all-around (37.25).

North’s Alli Chambers finished fifth on the bars (7.65) and sixth in the all-around (31.9). Marieme Niang tied for fifth on the floor (8.85).
