Hansons repeat as broomball league champs

Top-seeded Hansons defended their Columbus Broomball League championship last week with a 4-3 win against second-seeded Monsters of Rock.

Matt Street and Max Warr each netted two goals for Hansons. Rob Jones and Ben Eckhart scored for Monsters of Rock.

Our Name Is Earl edged CCA 2-1 in a shootout in the third place game. Tom Kareus scored in regulation, and Darren Eckerly had the shootout goal for Earl. Todd Houchin scored for CCA.

In the fifth-place game, Jennings County BC topped Toyota Tsunamis 5-4. Kyle Hunterman netted two goals, and Skylar Mathews, Aaron Klene and Stephanie Castetter all had one for Jennings. Dalton McNealy and Jimmy Robertson each scored twice for Tsunamis.

SWIMMING

Club Olympia 11th at Age-Group State

Club Olympia Swim Team racked up 400 points to finish 11th in last weekend’s Indiana Short Course Age Group State Swimming Championships at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

From its seven athletes who had qualified for individual events and another six that swam on relay teams, Club Olympia claimed six Silver Medal second-place finishes and four Bronze Medal third-place finishes and combined for 29 swims where they reached finals and placed 16th or better to score team points.

Tony Machavariani led the way with 94 points, good for fourth place in the Boys 10-and-under High Point standings. He had eight podium finishes and helping his two relay teams finish top-eight, as well. He finished in second in the 100-yard breaststroke, third in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and fourth in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle.

Club Olympia’s Connelly Furnish finished runner-up in four events in the Girls 11-12 division in last weekend’s Indiana Short Course Age Group State Swimming Championships at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

Connelly Furnish scored 93 points to finish fourth in the Girls 11-12 division, placing top-eight in all six of her individual events. She finished second in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke. Furnish also was fifth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 100 freestyle.

Misha Machavariani, a Columbus East freshman, placed top-eight in five of his Boys 13-14 events and scored 72 points. He finished third in the 100 breaststroke and 1650 freestyle, fifth in the 500 freestyle and 1000 freestyle and seventh in the 400 IM.

Joshua Pendleton scored 68 points by placing top-nine in five of his six Boys11-12 events. Pendleton finished second in the 500 freestyle, fourth in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle, sixth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 100 freestyle.

Todd Hundley, also an East freshman, finished with 16 points after placing 10th in the Boys 13-14 1650 freestyle, 11th in the 1000 freestyle and 14th in the 200 backstroke.

Shreyan Kulkarni scored seven points by placing 14th in the Boys 10U 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly and 16th in the 200 IM.

Vivan Shah led off the Boys 10U 200 medley relay on the backstroke leg with a personal best by one second. Kulkarni swam the breaststroke leg, followed by Tony Machavariani on the butterfly leg, and then Daxton Wolf anchored the relay and dropped two seconds off his previous best 50 freestyle time. The relay team dropped more than four seconds to finish in sixth, giving three of the relay members their first podium finish and medal at a state championship meet.

The 200 freestyle relay consisted of Kulkarni, Wolf, Arjun Agarkar and Tony Machavariani. That relay also dropped four seconds and finished in a tie for eighth.

The Girls 11-12 200 Medley and 200 freestyle relays, consisting of Advika Badve, Sanaa Kulkarni, Nandini Kondhare and Connelly Furnish finished in 15th and 19th place, respectively.

Aashka Shah, swimming in her first Age Group State meet, finished 21st in the Girls 10U 100 butterfly.

Eleven Club Olympia athletes are competing in this weekend’s Senior State Short Course Swimming Championships in Elkhart.
