Deputies arrest vehicle passenger on multiple charges after traffic stop on North U.S. 31

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies arrested a Kentucky man on multiple charges after a traffic stop in the area of North U.S. 31 and Interstate 65 on Sunday.

Deputy Dylan Prather made the stop at 9:46 p.m., and while speaking with the occupants, detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that there was a valid protection order in place between the driver and passenger, Deon Eiland, 50, Louisville, Kentucky.

Eiland later admitted to having a firearm inside the vehicle that was concealed inside an article of clothing in the trunk, deputies said. Eiland was determined to be a serious violent felon and is not permitted to possess a firearm.

Eiland was remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of:
–Serious violent felon in possession of a firearm (Level 4 Felony)
–Carrying a handgun without a license (Level 5 Felony)
–Unlawful possession of a firearm by a domestic batterer (Class A-Misdemeanor)
–Unlawful possession of a firearm by a dangerous person (Class A-Misdemeanor)
–Invasion of privacy (Class A-Misdemeanor)
–Possession of marijuana (Class B-Misdemeanor)
Eiland remains in jail in lieu of $128,500 bond.
