James A. Clampitt

COLUMBUS

James A. Clampitt, 85, a resident of Columbus, formerly of Jonesville, passed from this life at

3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at the Columbus Regional Hospital.

Mr. Clampitt entered life March 14, 1937, in Lawrence County, Indiana, the son of the late Charles O. and Oma Blanch Umphress Clampitt. On June 28, 1958, James married Olive Marie Dean; she preceded him in death March 25, 2017.

Mr. Clampitt served in the Indiana Army Reserve National Guard rising to the rank of Specialist Third Class. He served in Company D, 138th Tank Battalion Cyclone Division during the Korean War era. He was honorably discharged January 26, 1958.

Immediately after high school, Mr. Clampitt began a 45 year career with Cummins Engine Company. He worked in the test cell department and was a member of and a former captain of the Hazmat Emergency Response Team. Mr. Clampitt was a 60 year resident of Jonesville, Indiana where he was the town marshal for many years and served on the fire department.

He was baptized in Zoah Christian Church, and he was a faithful member of Jonesville Christian Church. He enjoyed membership in the Jackson Masonic Lodge No. 146 in Seymour, and he had a passion for fishing, camping and traveling.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his children, Latricia (Jeff) Metz of Columbus, William (Rebecca) Clampitt of Charlotte, Michigan and Paul (Amy) Clampitt of Columbus; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Alice Vernon of Michigan City, Indiana, Ellen Gillogoly of Largo, Florida and Evelyn Brown of Scottsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Clampitt was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Blanch Clampitt; his wife, Olive Marie Clampitt; and six siblings.

The funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2022, at the Jonesville Christian Church with Brother Marvin Wright officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from

10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

Mr. Clampitt will be laid to rest next to his wife in Section 91 at Garland Brook Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Indiana Army Reserve National Guard Honor Guard.
