Bull Dogs open with win

EDINBURGH — Columbus North opened the season Saturday with a victory in the 17-team Edinburgh Invitational.

The Bull Dogs fired a 304 team total. Greenwood finished second with a 310.

Luke Schneider led North with a 71 and lost to Greenwood’s Jackson Watkins in a playoff for medalist honors. The Bull Dogs’ Jack Schiavello tied for third with a 76, Tyler Wilks tied for seventh with a 77, Willy Davis added an 80 and Aditya Banerjee had an 87.

Edinburgh finished ninth with at 367. Max Blandford tied for third with a 76, Trevor Moon carded an 88, Mason Calhoun added a 97, Cash Cunningham shot 106 and Devyn Milburn had a 114.

Trinity Lutheran finished 13th with a 398. Jacob Sabotin led the Cougars with an 84, Kade Hill added a 99, Caleb Williams shot 107 and Preston Kovener had a 108.

Hauser finished 15th with a 419. Chase Martoccia led the Jets with a 92, Caleb Wallace added a 93, Bryce Kunze and Zach Weichman each shot 117 and Jesse Bragg had a 119.

North, East compete

SEYMOUR — Columbus North’s second-team finished fourth in the nine-team Seymour Invitational. Second-ranked Guerin Catholic won with a 300 to 340 for Bloomington North, 345 for Bedford North Lawrence and 346 for the Bull Dogs.

John Ferguson led North with an 84. Brady Schneider carded an 85, John Merritt added an 86, Joseph Perkins shot 91 and Damon Gregory had a 92. Luke Friend, playing as an individual, shot 85.

Columbus East finished fifth with a 353. Pierce Arnholt led the Olympians with an 81, Spencer Erfmeier carded an 87, Carter Greene added an 88, Ben Luedeke shot 97 and Jared Brooks had a 104. Conrad Eggers, playing as an individual, shot 112.

Jennings County finished ninth with a 395. Jake Grider led the Panthers with a 93, Jack George carded a 94, Davey Shaw added a 96, Rowan Cook shot 112 and Tanner Stearns had a 120.

Bull Dogs win pair

TERRE HAUTE — Columbus North won a pair of Conference Indiana games in Terre Haute, beating Terre Haute North 6-0 and Terre Haute South 13-0.

Rachel Cowan went 2 for 4 and threw a three-hitter with 18 strikeouts against Terre Haute North. Kelsey Lovelace went 2 for 4 with a double, and Emalee Heafner clubbed a grand slam.

Maddi Rutan went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs and threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts against Terre Haute South. Josie Lemmons went 3 for 5 with a double, Lillian Mackey went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, Bailey King went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Lovelace went 2 for 4 and Lucy Norman had a double and two RBIs for the Bull Dogs (3-0, 2-0).

Panthers sweep East

BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington South swept a doubleheader from Columbus East, winning 15-3 and 14-0, both in five innings.

Kaylee Cole went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs in the opener. Mackenzie Sigman had the lone hit for the Olympians (1-3) in the second game.

Bears top Jennings

SHELBYVILLE — Jennings County led 5-4 after three innings, but Shelbyville rallied for a 10-5 victory.

Kenzie Matern went 2 for 3 with a home run for the Panthers (0-4). Delaynee McCreary had a double and three RBIs.

BASEBALL

East splits pair

ANDERSON — Columbus East split a pair of games in the Anderson Tournament, falling to Whiteland 9-5 and beating Anderson 12-8.

The Olympians outhit Whiteland 8-7 in the opener, but gave up eight walks. Harry Major went 2 for 3, and starting pitcher Logan Christophel went 2 for 4.

Against Anderson, Josh Luedeke went 2 for 3, and Chase Zapfe had a home run and two RBIs for the Olympians (1-1-1). Jacob Clark picked up the win in relief of Parker Harris.

Panthers split pair

WESTFIELD — Jennings County split a pair of games in a showcase at Grand Park, falling to Harrison (West Lafayette) 15-8 and beating Norwell 17-11.

Logan McIntosh went 2 for 3, and Lane Zohrlaut went 2 for 4 against Harrison. Matt Hines had a triple and two RBIs.

Against Norwell, winning pitcher Keegan Manowitz went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs for the Panthers (2-1). Carson McNulty went 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs; Matt Hines went 2 for 5 with a double, a homer and two RBIs; Austin Byford went 2 for 4 and Grayson Jackson went 2 for 5.

Cougars fall to Tigers

FAIRLAND — South Decatur picked up its first win of the season, a 9-7 victory at Triton Central.

Zaydun Sharp, Brady Lane and Dale Peters combined on a seven-hitter for the Cougars (1-1). Hunter Johnson had a double.

Chargers blank Eagles

NASHVILLE — North Decatur scored seven times in the first inning and went on to hand Brown County a 10-0 defeat.

The Eagles (0-2) were held to one hit, a single by Jack Sichting.

TRACK AND FIELD

Panthers sweep Olympians

BLOOMINGTON —Bloomington South swept a dual meet with Columbus East in the Olympians’ season opener. The Panther boys won 88 1/2-43 1/2, and the Bloomington South girls won 73-59.

Emma Gray led the East girls with wins in the long jump (15 feet, 4 1/4 inches), 100-meter hurdles (16.74 seconds) and 300 hurdles (50.33). Megan Tracy took the discus (108-1), Taylor Scott captured the 100 (16.74), Norah Dwenger won the 400 (1:04.56), Mallory Rupp took the 200 (28.89) and the Olympians captured the 4×400 relay (4:25.48).

All four wins for the East boys came in field events. Anthony Lloyd won the high jump (5-8) and long jump (19-9 1/2), and Jacob Guse took the shot put (48-11) and discus (140-0).

GIRLS TENNIS

Olympians drop opener

Columbus East opened its season with a 5-0 loss to New Albany.

Katie Hong fell to Clarie Meyer 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Katey Rieckers lost to Marissa Witt 4-6, 6-0, (10-3) at No. 2 singles and Ruth Federle fell to Claire Stack 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians.

East’s Betsy Hoene and Allie Gribbins lost to Lily Meyer and Natalie Saydera 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Ashlynn Waddle and Avery Brooks fell to Corrine Miller and Macie Crone 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
