Not so Newlywed finale set for Thursday

Republic file photo Contestants Suzanne and Chuck Wells high-five after he answers the question in the way she anticipated during the Not So Newlywed Game, to benefit Turning Point Domestic Violence Services, at The Commons, Thursday, October 4, 2018.

A quick quiz for today’s married couples: When does being right in a disagreement count for nothing? In Turning Point Domestic Violence Services’ Not-So-Newlywed Game: The Finale slated at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at The Commons, 300 Washingt0n St. in downtown Columbus.

Tickets, priced at $60 and including dinner, still are available at turningpointdv.org

The lighthearted competition, loosely based on television’s “The Newlywed Game,” will feature five local couples who won the non-profit’s first five competitions now facing off in a marital championship of sorts. Spouses answer questions such as the site of their first date, hoping to match answers, even if those answers are not necessarily factual.

In other words, spouses must correctly anticipate what they think their partner answered while the other mate was sequestered where the answer could not he heard. The event is a fundraiser for Turning Point’s wide range of programs highlighting healthy relationships, and those helping domestic violence victims in unhealthy relationships in Bartholomew, Brown, Jackson, Johnson, and Shelby counties.

The competing couples and the year that they originally won are:|

  • Jayne and Charlie Farber (2015)
  • Diana and Tony Gambaiani (2016)
  • Lorraine and Charles Smith (2017)
  • Suzanne and Chuck Wells (2018)
  • Julie and Paul Furber (2019)

Mickey Kim, who provides ample comic relief among the couples’ banter and sometimes-puzzling answers, returns as host. The COVID-19 pandemic the past two years delayed the gathering.

This year’s competition also will include a new challenge. Paul Furber and Jon Rohde will compete for best Barbecue in the Pitmaster Challenge inside The Commons before the fundraiser. Votes for best barbecue will benefit Turning Point.

Doors and a cash bar open at 5:30 p.m. with a dinner served at 6 p.m. with the game show beginning a half hour later.

Votes for favorite couples are being collected now to directly support the Sarah Cannon Dance Marathon Scholarships. Cannon was a longtime community leader who died in June.
