Bull Dogs stun Stars

BEDFORD — Maddi Rutan smacked a solo home run to lead off the top of the ninth inning Tuesday to give Class 4A No. 8 Columbus North a 1-0 upset win at 4A No. 3 Bedford North Lawrence.

Rutan went all nine innings in the circle for the Bull Dogs (12-2). She threw a four-hitter and struck out 14.

East tops Jennings

NORTH VERNON — Megan Kennedy went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and threw a five-hitter to lead Columbus East to a 14-3, five-inning Hoosier Hills Conference win at Jennings County.

Kaylee Smith went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Kenzie Foster went 2 for 3 with a double and Addy Ross went 2 for 4 with a double for the Olympians (5-9). Mackenzie Sigman added two RBIs.

Delaynee McCreary went 2 for 3 for the Panthers (6-7), who saw their six-game winning streak snapped. Alexis Carson had a double and two RBIs.

Titans stop Cougars

GREENSBURG — Tri built and early 11-0 lead and went on to hand South Decatur a 15-4, five-inning defeat.

Lakota Henry went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for the Cougars (1-8).

BASEBALL

North rallies for win

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North scored the tying run in the top of the seventh and went ahead with three in the ninth to post a 9-6 Conference Indiana win at Southport.

Zach Wager had three hits, including a double for the Bull Dogs (9-2-1, 1-0). Zach McLean had two doubles and two RBIs, and Dyllan Redmon and Luke Harmon each had two RBIs.

Redmon picked up the win in relief of McLean.

Columbus Christian wins

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus Christian scored in all but one of the seven innings in rolling to an 18-9 win at Indiana Deaf.

Cam Pritchard went 2 for 2 with a double and five stolen bases for the Crusaders (4-3). Levi Hargis went 2 for 5 with three RBIs and Peyton Rehlander went 2 for 5. Gabe Ridder and Jordan Burton each had two RBIs

Rehlander and Ridder combined on an eight-hitter.

Eagles notch first win

NASHVILLE — Brown County picked up its first win in three years, a 6-5 victory against Southwestern (Shelby).

With the Eagles (1-5) leading 6-3 going to the seventh, the Spartans scored a pair of runs, but Noah Lewis pitched out of the jam. Lewis threw a five-hitter.

Cougars edge Twisters

OLDENBURG — South Decatur withstood a furious Oldenburg Academy rally in the bottom of the seventh to hang on for an 12-11 victory.

Avery Seegers went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs for the Cougars (11-2). Evan Wullenweber went 2 for 3, and Brady Lane went 2 for 4.

Lancers prevail

EDINBURGH — Greenwood Christian Academy outhit Edinburgh 10-7, but the runs were reversed in a 10-7 Lancer victory.

Riley Palmeter went 2 for 4, and Travis Jones had a home run and two RBIs for Edinburgh (2-8). Starting pitcher Gabe Bennett also had two RBIs.

BOYS GOLF

North JV tops Hauser

Brady Schneider won medalist honors with a 39 to lead the Columbus North JV to a 166-208 win against Hauser at Otter Creek.

Joseph Perkins carded a 41 for the Bull Dogs. John Ferguson added a 42, Osian Guest had a 44, John Merritt and Luke Friend each shot 45, Brennen Kushman had a 49 and Alex Clark finished with a 51.

Caleb Wallace led the Jets with a 49. Brenden Burton carded a 51, Chase Martoccia added a 53, Bryce Kuntz shot 55, Ben Johnson had a 62, Zach Weichman shot 66 and Marshall Moody finished with a 70.

New Albany tops JC

NEW ALBANY — Jennings County fell to New Albany 176-199.

Jack George led the Panthers with a 44. Davey Shaw carded a 49, Jake Grider added a 50, Tanner Stearns shot 56, Rowan Cook had a 60 and Eli Simmons finished with a 61.

Lancers take tri match

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh won a quad match at Timbergate, scoring 191 to 217 for Trinity Lutheran and 227 for Beech Grove. Medora did not have enough golfers to score as a team.

The Lancers’ Max Blandford tied for medalist honors with a 44. Trevor Moon carded a 48, Devyn Milburn added a 49, Mason Calhoun shot 50, Cash Cunningham had a 54, Wyatt Burton shot 57, Keegan Smith had a 65 and Devin Hamilton finished with a 69.

Kade Hill led Trinity with a 50. Preston Kovener added a 51. Caleb Williams shot 54, and Wiley Jones had a 62.

GIRLS TENNIS

North takes first loss

No. 3 Columbus North was missing top singles player Ashlie Wilson, and its reshuffled lineup fell to Kentucky power North Oldham 4-1.

Annabelle Sun and Sydney Cooper had the lone win for the Bull Dogs (5-1), beating Addie Droppelman and Kaylin Frazier 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

North’s Kathryn Wilson fell to Reagan Mangan 5-7, 6-4, (10-1) at No. 1 singles, Aya Saad lost to Bailey Scott 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Siri Poludasu fell to Claire Morris 6-4, 3-6, (10-6) at No. 3 singles. Tiffany Fu and Leah George lost to Adeline Masters and Kaitlyn McCraney 7-6 (4), 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

East falls to Franklin

Franklin won all five matches in straight sets in handing Columbus East a 5-0 defeat.

Katie Hong at No. 1 singles and Shruthika Kumar at No. 2 singles lost by 6-0, 6-0 scores, and Ruth Federle fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (1-9). East’s Cathrine Millwood and Katey Rieckers lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Betsy Hoene and Adyson States lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Jets slip past Cubs

HOPE — Hauser pulled out a second-set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles to post a 3-2 victory against Madison.

Bella Kilps beat Anna Bluemm 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Lydia Jordan topped Claire Slygh 6-4, 7-6 (2) at No. 3 singles for the Jets (3-5). Gabby Johns and Charlie Clark defeated Taylor Harsin and Erin Burkhardt 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Hauser’s Addyson Barriger fell to Trinity Stoner 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Mattie Foster and Abby Blair lost to Hailey Jenkins and Addison Mundt 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Pirates top Panthers

GREENSBURG — Jennings County won a third set supertiebreaker at No. 2 singles, but Greensburg took the other four matches in straight sets in a 4-1 decisioon.

Tatum Brown beat Abigail Hoeing 6-4, 3-6, (12-10) at No. 2 singles for the Panthers (4-5).

Jennings’ Reagan Brown fell to Jenna Foster 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and Mia Silvey lost to Josie Nobbe 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Maria Ecker Alberti and Lucy Brown fell to Ella Chapman and Janae Comer 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Caitlyn Shuck and Amy Vogel lost to Morgan Cain and Hailey Duerstock 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

Eagles handle Owls

SEYMOUR — Brown County pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 doubles, but Seymour won the others in straight sets to claim a 4-1 victory.

Katie Tipton and Mary Rygiel beat Caroline Thompson and Tori Fee 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles for the Eagles (6-2).

Brown County’s Anna Stogsdill fell to Brooke Schafstall 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Anna Tipton lost to Madalyn Baurle 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Mattie Satter fell to Elise Hartung 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Kylie Workman and Julia Burt lost to Ashley Clemente and Addison Hensley 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

TRACK AND FIELD

North sweeps tri meet 

Despite resting its top distance runners, Columbus North swept a home tri meet. The Bull Dog boys scored 100 points to 51 for East Central and 16 for Shelbyville, while the North girls edged East Central 81-80 and Shelbyville finished with six.

Winners for the North boys were Bryant Trinkle in the long jump (18 feet, 7 1/2 inches), Tucker Smith in the shot put (69-2), Liam Milne in the 110-meter hurdles (16.47 seconds), Alex Narvaez in the 100 (11.56), Adam Reckers in the 1,600 (4:50.84), Josh Wright in the 300 hurdles (43.00), Wil Littrell in the 800 (2:10.67) and Sam Hobbeheyder in the 3,200 (9:53.83). The Bull Dogs also took the 4×800 relay (9:04.40).

Natalie Ho led the North girls with wins in the 100 (13.16) and 200 (27.62). Other winners were Alivia Steinkoenig in the shot (37-3 1/2), Emma Martin in the discus (105-3), Kyleigh Wolf in the 1,600 (5;25.36) and Abby Jacobi in the 3,200 (11:59.99). The Bull Dogs also captured the 4×800 relay (10:10.01).

Panthers win invite 

SEYMOUR Jennings County and Columbus East went 1-2 in the Seymour Invitational, which was for boys only. The Panthers scored 121 points to 117 for the Olympians and 114 for Seymour.

Kraedyn Young led Jennings with wins in the 1,600 (4:35.38) and 800 (2:09.05). The Panthers also won the 4×800 relay (8:36.04).

East’s Anthony Lloyd won the high jump (6-1) and 100 (11.58), and Jacob Guse took the shot (47-11 3/4) and discus (147-8). Gavin Edgecomb captured the pole vault (9-6), Charlie Russell won the 110 hurdles (15.96) and Rocco Duffy took the 200 (23.42).

Jet boys finish second

BATESVILLE — Hauser’s boys finished second in a quad meet at Batesville. Batesville won with 125 points to 49 for the Jets, 40 for North Decatur and 23 for Jac-Cen-Del.

Aleck Lopez won the long jump (19 feet, 8 1/2 inches), and Cephus Zulu took the 300-meter hurdles (44.68 seconds) to lead Hauser.

Batesville won the girls meet with 121 points to 53 for Jac-Cen-Del, 34 for North Decatur and 20 for the Jets. Amanda Steward led Hauser with a second-place finish in the 3,200 (15:54.34).

GIRLS LACROSSE

North downs Noblesville

GREENWOOD — Avery Stults scored four goals Monday to lead Columbus North to a 9-5 win against Noblesville at Center Grove.

Liberty Jones had three goals for North. Rylie Boezeman and Kasey Kelley each added one.
