Girl Scouts to explore truck careers

Marvin Johnson &Associates and Cummins Inc. are hosting a group of Girl Scouts for an educational event Saturday called “Trucks ARE for Girls.” The event will be at the Cummins corporate office building on Jackson Street.

The event is sponsored through the Women in Trucking Association through its Girl Scout Transportation Patch program.

Fifty Girl Scouts ranging in age from 5 to 17 from Central Indiana have been invited to participate in the event which is designed to help educate them on the transportation and supply chain industry and introduce them to the career opportunities the industry has to offer.

During the event, the Girl Scouts will learn about trucking’s role in the supply chain and the industry’s focus on safety.

Cummins engineers will speak about the evolution of engine design focusing on future zero emissions.

A driver ambassador with the association will drive her tractor pulling a new “WITney Trailer.”

The trailer features educational components introducing the career of professional truck driving and features female success stories.

The Safety Team from Marvin Johnson &Associates will have a truck driving simulator at the event to offer the Girl Scouts a unique experience of driving a tractor-trailer.

Cummins is providing several vehicles for the Girl Scouts to explore.

Each Girl Scout will receive a cinch sack of goodies, a Girl Scout Transportation Patch and an official Women in Trucking doll.

Each Girl Scout participant will also earn an automotive engineering badge, while the older Girl Scouts will earn an entrepreneur accelerator badge. These participants will design and construct a motor vehicle from recycled items, decode a phrase from the Wingdings font and conduct a vehicle inspection report.
