Local go-kart racers get two races in the books

Troy Cowan of Columbus had a successful weekend, winning the pred division feature at both Columbus and North Vernon in local go-kart racing action.

Columbus Speedway Go-Kart Racing, which holds events at the Tony Stewart Speedway located at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds, was able to hold its first racing night of 2022 on April 29.

Division winners were Joe Boyll (mod lites), Robby Young (clone heavy and clone medium), Jake Hudak (junior 1), Maverick Harris (rookies), Jacob Chadd (junior 2), Troy Cowan (pred), Blake Robertson (junior 3), and Travis Wilburn (clone super heavy).

Racing continues this evening with the drivers meeting at 5:30 p.m. There is free admission to the grandstand area. The pit admission is $20.

Jennings County go-kart results

Jennings County Outlaw Karting, which holds events at the Jennings County 4-H Fairgrounds in North Vernon, was able to get its race program in on April 30. Division winners were Ricky Bernard (junior 3, pro purple and senior champ), Jacob Chadd (junior 2), Sawyer Bohall (youth champ), Jentry Cash (junior outlaw), Bentley Henderson (junior champ), Colton Aldridge (rwyb), Maverick Harris (rookies), Johnny Smith (clone 340), Connor Perry (junior 1), Nathan Sipes (clone 420), Brayden Parsley (flatheads and clone 380)), Troy Cowan (pred), and Leroy Blevins (small block open).

The next scheduled event will be on Friday.

Stapleton wins at Brownstown

With rain all around Brownstown Speedway, the track staff did all they could do to speed up the program, and by 9:30 p.m., all events were complete on April 30. Chad Stapleton would also do all he could do in Graphix Indiana Late Model Series Pro Late Models as he would lead flag-to-flag to get his first ILMS win of the year.

Stapleton held off all challenges in the feature and get the win over Tyler Collins, Britan Godsey, Steve Peeden, and Jug Wethington. Sixth thru tenth would be Keaton Streeval, Caleb Schryer, Justin Bowling, Alan Magner and Greg Kendall.

Derek Clegg made his first appearance of the year in Pewter Hall Super Stocks and found his way to Victory Lane. Clegg led the field to the green and fell back to third before making a charge back to the front to get the win over Zach Sasser, Greg Amick, Dalton Fleenor and Blake Hull.

In All in 1 Pools Pure Stock feature action Keaton Streeval got his first win of the year. Streeval crossed the checkers ahead of Josh Turner, Josh Hayes, Edgar Godsey and Mickey Hines.

Michael Brewer recorded his third win in a row in Cain’s Tree Servic Hornet features for the year. Brewer’s third win came in front of Jacob Owens, Shannon Walp, Keaton Durbin and Kaleb Caudill.

Michael Cranmer remains undefeated in Flag 2 Flag Media Crown Vics, recording his third win in three races for the year. Billy Heil, Brandon Cranmer, Anthony Finley and Joel Smith followed Michael Cranmer at the finish.

Rock Crest opener delayed

Rock Crest Raceway, formerly known as Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon, was forced to postpone its opening night race on May 6. The scheduled opener is now set for Friday with 410 non- wing sprints, pure stocks, hornets and crown vics.

Bloomington washed out

The races scheduled for May 6 at Bloomington Speedway were rained out. Up next on Friday will be the Roddy Strong Memorial for modifieds. Also competing will be sprints, modifieds and hornets.

The USAC National Sprint Car race April 29 was halted before the feature due to rain and will be made up at a later date.

Florence canceled for tonight

The scheduled Ralph Latham Memorial Race tonight at Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky, has been postponed to June 30. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event will pay $15,000 to

win. On April 30, Tim McCreadie won the $3,000 late model special.

This week in racing history

From 70 years ago in 1952, Columbus hosted two racing events on the same day, with Wayne Ford winning the feature at the Columbus Speedway over Dale Miller and Larry Fleener. Bobby Baker took

the feature win at the 25th Street Fairgrounds Raceway over Johnny Poore and Freddie Wilbur.

From 50 years ago, Brownstown Speedway was finally able to open its 1972 racing season after several weeks of rainouts. Jim Curry won the late model feature over Russ Petro, Ira Bastin, William Wampler and Carl Collins.

Also from 1972 at Twin Cities, Tommy Day won the season-opening main event over Johnny Robbins, Phil Fultz, Hillbilly Ogle and Chuck Gilpin.

From 1972 Paragon Speedway, hosted its season opener with Larry Miller winning the sprint car feature over Allen Barr, Mike Waltz, Sheldon Kinser and Danny Bowlen. Bud Glidden won the stock car feature over Steve Bowlen, Charlie Pate and Roland Cousin.

From 40 years ago in 1982 at Brownstown, Kenny Simpson won the late model feature over Ray Godsey, Doug Ault, Bob Fleetwood and Steve Barnett. Darrell Hunter took the street stock feature over Bob Johnson, Ted Pfeiffer Jr., Rick Hines and Ernie Niemoeller.

Also from 1982 at Twin Cities, Lee Fleetwood won the limited late model feature race over Steve Boley, Roger Sullivan, Gregg Lyle and Bud Seymour. Darrell Smallwood took the street stock feature over Willie Sallee, Larry Gingery, Clyde James and Tim Wilburn.

From 30 years ago in 1992 at Brownstown, Steve Barnett won the late model feature over Kevin Claycomb, Don O’Neal, Bryan Dunaway, and Doug Ault. Bobby Allen won the winged sprint car feature over Kevin Briscoe, Terry Shepherd, Kelly Kinser and Gary Wright. Mark Barber won the street stock main event over Scott Patman, Joe Lucas, Jeff Wilson and Tim Clark.

Also from 1992 at Haubstadt, Kevin Briscoe won the sprint car feature over Mike Thurman and Joey Nash. Bill Shaw took the late model feature over Mike Jewell and Kevin Claycomb.

From 30 years ago at Martin County Speedway in Loogootee, Albert Webb Jr. won the street stock feature over Chris Smallwood, Bobby Davis, Perry Bruce and Greg Benton. Dwayne Klem won the bomber feature race over Ron Hoffman, John Lane, Buddy Pettyjohn and Ray Godsey Jr.

From 1992, Lawrenceburg Speedway opened it’s season with Todd Shields winning the sprint car feature over Larry Bland, Mike Bowling, Ross Rogers and Rick Ungar. Ron Johnson won the modified feature over Merrill Downey, Mike McWilliams, Andy Niles and Trent Knittel.
