Commission tables request for new KFC

Plans by developers to add a new Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Columbus Crossing on Columbus’ west side may have to wait a little longer.

The Columbus Plan Commission recently tabled a request from KBP Brands for approval of a final Planned Unit Development plan for the restaurant, which would be located at a property on the north side of Merchant’s Mile, about 400 feet west of Johnson Boulevard.

According to a report from planning staff, applicants plan to build a 2,200 square foot restaurant and drive-thru on Lot 8B-A of Columbus Crossing.

This currently vacant property is just west of Belle Tire and south of Holiday Inn. It is owned by Menard, Inc.

There is one other KFC in Columbus, located at 2760 Brentwood Drive off of U.S. 31.

There used to be another at 3660 Jonathan Moore Pike, but the property is now home to a Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers.

After some discussion, plan commission members voted to continue KBP Brands’ request to the board’s next meeting, which is set for June 8.

City/county planning director Jeff Bergman recommended the continuance. He said that while there has been “an evolution of a number of components of this project,” the department believes that further work may still be needed.

Landscaping, building design, and drive-access were cited as specific areas to address, in addition to some other technical questions, city officials said.
