‘Once a Sonic, always a Sonic’: Seniors revisit Smith for graduation walk

Mike Wolanin | The Republic Class of 2022 graduates take part in a senior walk through the halls of Smith Elementary School in Columbus, Ind., Friday, May 20, 2022. Graduating seniors that attended Smith were invited take part in the senior walk to celebrate the accomplishment of graduating high school.

With just a few days until graduation, some high school seniors recently revisited their alma mater elementary school for a special celebration.

Members of the class of 2022 who previously attended Smith Elementary participated in an annual senior walk Friday at the school, marching down the halls in their caps and gowns to much applause.

According to fourth grade teacher and event organizer Julia Whitlock, the “Sonic Senior Walk” first began in 2018. Participation varies with 25-30 students on average, and the walk is open to any former Sonic set to graduate.

Seniors in the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. aren’t the only ones to return to Smith; in some years, students have also made the trek from Hauser Jr./Sr. High School and even out of state.

“We always say, ‘Once a Sonic, always a Sonic,’” said Whitlock.

During the walk, current students line up in the halls and tunnels of Smith to cheer on the seniors. According to Whitlock, the event is the school’s way of showing support for its former students as they enter this next phase of life. It also gives these seniors a chance to catch up with old friends and teachers.

“It is very emotional for teachers and staff to see the graduates return and walk the halls one final time,” she said. “We also believe it is important for our current students to see the former students and be inspired by their success. They will also see that they are always a part of our school family and always welcome.”
