Son of Columbus native wins Colorado state title
Sam Johnson, the grandson of Columbus resident Dick Johnson, won the Colorado Class 3A state title in the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 2 inches, last week.
Johnson also competed at state in the shot put and pole vault. His throwing coach at Woodland Park High School is his father Steve Johnson, a former Columbus North athlete.
Because he was homeschooled through his sophomore year, Sam Johnson still has a year of high school left. Sam, who also played soccer and basketball at Woodland Park, is out of high school eligibility athletically, but hopes to throw in college after next year.
