Bull Dog quartet takes 4th in nation

After setting the state meet record in the 4×800-meter relay at the Boys Track and Field State Finals, Columbus North went up against the nation’s best Saturday at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon.

Juniors Mateo Mendez and Clayton Guthrie and seniors Evan Carr and Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff finished fourth in 7 minutes, 46.78 seconds. Hinsdale (Illinois) won in 7:32.15.

Mendez led off with a 1:52.81 split. Guthrie then ran a 1:56.18, Carr followed in 2:06.42 and Kilbarger-Stumpff anchored in 1:51.37.

Mendez, Guthrie and Kilbarger-Stumpff teamed with senior Matt Newell to win the state title in 7:37.90 earlier this month in Bloomington. Carr finished 18th at state in the 3,200.

North’s Schneider named All-State

Columbus North senior Luke Schneider has been named to the All-State Boys Golf team by the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association.

Schneider tied for 44th at last week’s state finals with rounds of 79 and 81. But his overall averages of 74.0 in 18 matches of 18 holes and 34.0 in his two 9-hole matches put him among the top players in the state this season.

Schneider has committed to play collegiately at Evansville.

East’s Gant wins Critzer Award

Recent Columbus East graduate Harley Gant is this year’s recipient of the Andy Critzer Memorial Scholarship.

Gant was a four-year varsity golfer for the Olympians and a two-time state qualifier. She is the only girls golfer in East history to qualify for the state finals.

Gant also played four years of basketball for the Olympians and was a two-year varsity player. She is headed to Purdue, where she plans to major in civil engineering.

Hauser’s Johns headed to Earlham

Gabby Johns, who set Hauser’s single-season rebounding record, plans to continue her basketball career at Earlham.

Johns averaged 6.5 points and led the Jets with 8.4 rebounds a game as a senior. She also played volleyball and tennis at Hauser.

North’s Barker stars in All-Star Classic

Columbus North’s Lauren Barker led Junior Girls Team 2 Red with 12 points and seven rebounds Saturday in a 68-57 loss to Junior Girls Team 2 White in the Class Basketball All-Star Classic at Anderson University.

Trinity Lutheran’s Bailey Tabeling had nine points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals for Junior Girls Team 1 White in a 78-64 loss to Junior Girls Team 1 Red.

Julian Woodard, who just finished her sophomore year at Jennings County, scored eight points and led Future Girls Team Red with six rebounds and three steals in a 66-50 win against Future Girls Team White.

North duo competes in Junior National Duals

Two Columbus North wrestlers competed for Team Indiana in last week’s Junior National Duals in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Bull Dog coach Matt Joyce was one of the coaches for Team Indiana.

Recent North graduate Jared Slocum won three matches, and incoming junior Josiah Green won one match for Team Indiana.

“This is the toughest dual tournament in the country,” Joyce said. “I am very proud of those guys accepting the challenge to go compete against the best.”

Incoming sophomore Justice Thornton and incoming freshman Asher Ratliff will compete for Indiana next month in Fargo, North Dakota.
