Making A Splash: Swimmers shine in Senior, Age Group State Championships

As the 2022 summer long-course season winds down, Club Olympia Swim Team and Donner Swim Club athletes are building some momentum going into the break before their high school seasons.

Both clubs sent swimmers to this weekend’s Indiana Swimming Age Group State Championships at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis and to the previous weekend’s Indiana Swimming Senior State Championships at IU’s Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington.

At the Age Group State meet, Club Olympia came away with four wins and five runner-up swims among its 17 total podium finishes in taking 17th overall out of 46 teams. Club Olympia’s boys finished eighth, with its 10-and-under boys coming in third, one point out of second.

Club Olympia’s Tony Machavariani won the 100-meter butterfly and 200 individual medley; finished second in the 50 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle and third in the 100 breaststroke on his way to a runner-up finish in the 10U Boys High Point standings.

Club Olympia’s Josh Pendleton won five medals at last weekend’s Indiana Age Group State Championships at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Josh Pendleton finished fourth in the 11-12 Boys division. Pendleton won the 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle, placed second in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle, fourth in the 200 IM and 12th in the 200 backstroke.

Shreyan Kulkarni finished third in the 10U Boys 100 butterfly, sixth in the 200 IM, seventh in the 100 breaststroke, ninth in the 200 freestyle, 12th in the 100 freestyle and 15th in the 50 butterfly. Lane Mellencamp took 34th in the 50 freestyle, 36th in the 100 freestyle and 38th in the 200 freestyle.

Connelly Furnish placed seventh in the 13-14 Girls 1,500 freestyle, 11th in the 800 freestyle, 12th in the 400 IM, 15th in the 200 IM, 18th in the 400 freestyle and 22nd in the 200 freestyle, setting personal records in all six events.

Machavariani, Kulkarni, Xavier Zhang and Daxton Wolf finished fifth in the 10U Boys 200 medley relay and sixth in the 200 freestyle relay. Arjun Agarkar, Vivian Shah, Aahan Gupta and Chad Pendleton took 22nd in the 200 freestyle relay; and Shah, Shourya Malviya, Gupta and Chad Pendleton were 25th in the 200 medley relay.

Donner, meanwhile, had its most swimmers at Age Group State since 2016 and finished 44th overall. The club had eight top-20 finishes, including a pair of relays, and had its first podium finish since 2015.

Donner Swim Club’s Camila Mejia Murguia medaled with a seventh-place finish in the 10U Girls 100 butterfly at last weekend’s Indiana Age Group State Championships at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Donner’s Camila Mejia Murguia landed on the podium with a seventh-place finish in the 10U Girls 100 butterfly. She also placed 14th in the 200 IM, 15th in the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle and 19th in the 100 freestyle.

Rebecca Mejia Murguia finished 13th in the 10U Girls 50 breaststroke and 24th in the 100 freestyle, and Lexi Miller took 30th in the 10U Girls 50 breaststroke. Aarush Mahato was 30th in the 13-14 Boys 100 butterfly and 66th in the 50 freestyle, and Mridula Muthukumaran came in 70th in the 13-14 Girls 50 freestyle.

A week earlier, 11 Club Olympia and one Donner swimmer competed in the Senior State meet for mostly high school and college swimmers. Club Olympia finished 16th out of 60 clubs, with the women’s team taking 14th.

Ashley Freel landed on the podium with a fifth-place finish in the Women’s 200 butterfly and led Club Olympia in scoring with 54 points. Freel also placed ninth in the 100 butterfly, 18th in the 200 freestyle, 22nd in the 50 freestyle, 24th in the 100 backstroke and 26th in the 100 freestyle.

Hope Westphal scored 34 points, placing 15th in the 1,500 freestyle, 16th in the 800 freestyle, 19th in the 400 freestyle, 20th in the 400 IM and 29th in the 200 freestyle. Maggie Johnson totaled 33 points, taking 13th in the 200 butterfly, 14th in the 1,500 freestyle, 19th in the 800 freestyle and 32nd in the 400 IM.

Freel, Westphal, Johnson and Furnish finished sixth in the 800 freestyle relay and combinations of those four and Annie Murer were 16th in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay and 19th in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.

On the Men’s side, Club Olympia’s Misha Machavariani scored 14 points, finishing 18th in the 800 freestyle and 1,500 freestyle, 25th in the 200 breaststroke, 26th in the 400 IM and 42nd in the 100 breaststroke. Dathan Wolf took 36th in the 200 backstroke and 45th in the 100 backstroke.

Various combinations of Misha Machavariani, Dathan Wolf, Judah Nickoll, Cole Ehara, Pratt Badve and Mellencamp took 21st in the 200 freestyle relay, 25th in the 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay and 27th in the 200 medley relay.

Donner’s Ellie Proffitt finished 49th in the Women’s 100 breaststroke and 67th in the 50 freestyle.

Meanwhile, incoming Columbus North senior Daniel Utterback, competing for Franklin Regional Swim Team, finished 23rd in the 100 freestyle and 28th in the 50 freestyle. Utterback also swam on the 11th-place 200 freestyle relay, 13th-place 400 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay, 18th-place 400 medley relay and 19th-place 200 medley relay teams.

Swimmers who achieved Divisional cuts will wrap up their summer seasons this weekend at the Indiana Swimming Divisional Championship at Franklin High School.
