East runs to victory

AURORA — Chloe Krueger won the girls race to lead Columbus East to a perfect score of 15 to win Saturday’s season-opening South Dearborn Moores Hill Invitational.

Krueger clocked 22 minutes, 35.7 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Carly Otte finished third in 24:11.8, while Madison Swartzentruber was fourth (24:15.6), Hayden Carothers sixth (24:31.4) and Victoria Cuhadar seventh (24:54.6).

South Decatur’s girls finished third with 71 points. Elizabeth Flessner led the Cougars with a 21st-place finish in 28:06.3, while Sami Storm was 22nd (28:28.0), Brayley Sundal 24th (28:42.4), Clair Schoettmer 25th (28:52.2) and Bridget Nobbe 26th (29:32.1).

The South Decatur boys finished third with 50 points, trailing South Ripley (34) and Lawrenceburg (37). Conner Newby took seventh in 21:41.1, while Donovan Hale was eighth (20:51.4), Chase Kalli ninth (21:09.3), Jack Hamilton 14th (21:52.6) and Damian Jackson 17th (22:35.1).

The East boys did not compete. The Olympians open their season Wednesday at the Brown County Challenge, where the East girls also will compete.

BOYS SOCCER

North blanks Cardinals

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North did not allow a shot on goal in opening the season with a 5-0 Conference Indiana win at Southport.

Christian Cardoso scored off an assist from Alejandro Alvarez in the 36th minute, and Aidan Whitley put in a rebound off an Anthony Johnson shot in the 45th minute to give the Bull Dogs a 2-0 halftime lead. Alvarez scored off an assist from Cardoso in the 75th minute, Flynn Keele added a goal in the 78th minute and Misaki Takemoto converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

North outshot the Cardinals 25-4, putting 15 shots on goal. Oscar Ballinas and Max Grewe combined on the shutout.

East falls to Falcons

INDIANAPOLIS — Perry Meridian scored twice in the first two minutes of the second half to break a scoreless tie and went on to post a 3-0 win against Columbus East in the season opener.

Pete Coriden recorded four saves for the Olympians.

Bull Dogs tie Braves

TERRE HAUTE — Columbus North took an early 2-0 lead in its season opener, but Terre Haute South rallied to post a 2-2 Conference Indiana tie.

Lauren Barker scored both goals for the Bull Dogs. Charlotte Loheide had an assist.

North outshot the Braves 18-6. Erica Kaufman, filling in for Mallory Gilley, recorded six saves in goal.

BOYS TENNIS

Woodmen edge East

Greenwood pulled out a three-set win at No. 3 singles to hand Columbus East a 3-2 loss in its season opener.

Matthew Degner beat Carter Chatham at No. 2 singles for the Olympians. Lincoln West and Ethan Kirk topped Ben Cruser and Devin Weidner 0-6, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

East’s Erik Takahashi fell to Noah Paswater 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Brady Redelman lost to Ian Ratliff 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Ethan Bumbalough and Henry Ulrich fell to Aidyn Green and Blake Reynolds 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

GIRLS GOLF

Panthers win invite

MADISON — Sophia Curry won medalist honors with an 82 to lead Jennings County to the title in the eight-team Madison Invitational.

The Panthers finished with a 385 team total. Madison finished second with a 424.

Jennings’ Alexis Carson finished second individually with an 86. Lauren Galvan added a 96, Rachael Manning shot 121 and Shelby Davis had a 128.

VOLLEYBALL

Eagles rally for win

GREENCASTLE — Brown County rallied after dropping the first set to open the season with a 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 26-24 Western Indiana Conference win at Greencastle.

Emma Lucas pounded 18 kills, Madilyn Hawley recorded 20 assists, Londyn Koester had 19 digs and Milly Patrick served five aces to lead the Eagles.

Also for Brown County, Abigail Watson notched 11 kills, Morgan Osborn tallied 15 assists and 12 digs, Lucas had 16 digs, Ava Kelly added 10 digs and Anna Stogsdill served two aces.

Lancers finish second

MORRISTOWN — Edinburgh made it to the championship game of the season-opening Morristown Invitational before falling to Northeastern 25-19, 25-21 to finish runner-up.

The Lancers beat Morristown 25-21, 25-15 and Jac-Cen-Del 25-19, 25-14 to advance to the final.

Trinity goes 2-2

CLARKSVILLE — Trinity Lutheran went 2-2 in the season-opening Providence Invitational, falling to Providence 25-17, 25-20; beating Evansville Mater Dei 25-17, 19-25, 15-12; falling to Springs Valley 25-21, 25-22 and beating Silver Creek 25-21, 25-18.

Laura Roeder led the Cougars with 45 digs and six aces. Bailey Tabeling pounded 44 kills, Addison Darlage recorded 82 assists, Carson Bowling had four blocks.

Also for Trinity, Bowling notched 33 kills, Tabeling added 29 digs and four aces, Ava Blomenburg tallied six kills and three blocks, Madison Keith had three blocks and Darlage added 27 digs and two aces.
