Hauser wins invitational

HENRYVILLE — Hauser won three three-set matches before sweeping Henryville in two sets Saturday to capture the Henryville Invitational.

The Jets beat North Harrison 18-25, 25-14, 15-8; Edinburgh 23-25, 25-16, 15-13; Paoli 23-25, 25-15, 15-11 and Henryville 25-20, 25-15.

“It was three really tough and intense matches, especially Edinburgh,” Hauser coach Jeff Case said. “That’s a rivalry, and they have a really good team this year.”

Kenze Bostic led the Jets (5-1) with 41 kills, 14 blocks and seven aces. Adrianna Musillami recorded 73 assists and seven aces, and Kyra Meister notched 60 digs.

Also for Hauser, Charlie Clark tallied 26 kills, 50 digs and two aces, and Kayden Miller added 18 kills, 16 digs and five aces. Paige McDaniel had six blocks, Mattie Foster had 39 digs and six aces and Musillami notched 35 digs.

Edinburgh (7-2) bounced back from its loss to Hauser by beating North Harrison 25-15, 25-23; Henryville 25-17, 25-18 and Paoli 21-25, 25-23, 15-9 to finish second in the tournament.

Gracie Crawhorn led the Lancers with 24 kills, seven blocks, 43 digs and seven aces. Kyah Streeval recorded 81 assists, and MacKenzie Bieker had seven blocks.

Also for Edinburgh, Bieker tallied 22 kills and 39 digs, and Jessica Walsh added 10 kills, 40 digs and four aces. Streeval had 10 kills and four aces, and Zoey Sida notched eight kills, and 34 digs.

East sweeps Red Devils

Columbus East remained unbeaten with a 25-14, 25-13, 25-5 Hoosier Hills Conference win against Jeffersonville.

Maddie Cline recorded 15 kills, eight digs and two aces, and Gabby Dean had three solo and one assist block and two aces to lead the Olympians (3-0, 1-0). Erin Williams tallied 27 assists, and Kenzie Foster notched eight digs.

Also for East Dean and Caroline Frost each pounded nine kills, and Cline had one solo and one assist block. Williams and Chloe Gilley each added seven digs.

Bull Dogs go 2-2

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North went 2-2 in the Franklin Central Invitational. The Bull Dogs fell to Zionsville 25-16, 25-22, beat East Chicago Central 25-10, 25-6, lost to North Decatur 25-18, 25-17 and beat Rushville 25-21, 25-20.

Emily Stair led North (3-3) with 29 digs and eight aces. Karen Dutro pounded 33 kills, Reese Edwards recorded 34 assists and Kaitlin White had 10 blocks.

Also for the Bull Dogs, Logan Branstetter tallied 18 kills, 13 digs and five aces. Emma Burns notched 30 assists, Kennedy Horn pounded eight kills, Dutro and Elaina Penrod each had six blocks and Edwards added 10 digs and two aces.

Kings tops Crusaders

MARION — Columbus Christian came close in the final two sets in a 25-15, 28-26, 25-23 loss at King’s Academy.

Emma Murray recorded four kills and one block, and Anika Jenkins had six digs and one block to lead the Crusaders (0-2). Emma Sewell recorded seven assists, and Paige Harden served four aces.

Also for Columbus Christian, Sewell pounded four kills, Alexys Murray notched five digs and Jenkins added two aces.

Braves rally past JC

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County won the first set, but Brownstown Central rallied for a 19-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-17 victory.

Avynn Belding pounded 15 kills, Zoie Suhre had three blocks and Lydia Roth notched 30 digs to lead the Panthers (1-2). Mallory Manowitz added 28 digs.

Eagles fall in 4

ELLETTSVILLE — Brown County won the second set 25-22, but Edgewood took the first, third and fourth to claim the Western Indiana Conference win.

Abigail Watson pounded 15 kills, Madilyn Hawley recorded 15 assists, Londyn Koester notched 29 digs and Milly Patrick served two aces to lead the Eagles (2-1, 1-1).

Also for Brown County, Emma Lucas tallied seven kills and 17 digs, and Patrick added five kills and 15 digs. Morgan Osborn had 12 assists, 11 digs and one ace, and Koester served one ace.

BOYS TENNIS

North wins twice

Columbus North went 2-1 in its “And Then There Were 4” invitational, falling to Zionsville 3-2 on Friday and beating both Delta and Jasper by 4-1 scores on Saturday.

Hank Lin at No. 1 singles and Anvay Atram and Amrit Kar at No. 1 doubles went 3-0 for the Bull Dogs (3-1). Parth Shah went 2-1 at No. 2 singles, and Austin Clark went 1-2 at No. 3 singles.

North’s Parth Gupta teamed with Darren Li to go 1-1 and with Toki Murabatashi to go 0-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Lions edge Jets

RUSHVILLE — Hauser won both doubles matches, but Rushville swept the singles matches to claim a 3-2 victory.

Levi Gollmer and Hunter Pappano beat Konner Parsley and Mason Mosburg 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles for the Jets (0-3). Jentzen Bechtel and Kameron Blair topped Clayton Chase and Lucas Vaughn 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Hauser’s Jackson Burcham fell to Jensen Smith 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Hagan Wiedersatz lost to Trevor Hunter 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and JJ Dickey fell to Josh Wainwright 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Panthers win invite

ST. LEON — Jennings County beat Milan 5-0 and East Central 4-1 to win the East Central Invitational.

Owen Law at No. 1 singles, Parker Bales at No. 2 singles, Justin Ramey and Ryan Schuck at No. 1 doubles and Alex Leach and Ty Zohrlaut at No. 2 doubles all went 2-0 for the Panthers (4-1). Janne Sebastian went 1-1 at No. 3 singles.

Lancers fall twice

CONNERSVILLE — Edinburgh fell to Connersville 5-0 and Hagerstown 3-2 in the Connersville Invitational.

Max Blandford at No. 1 singles and Austin Brockman at No. 2 singles each went 1-1 for the Lancers (0-4). Milas Burkman at No. 3 singles, Bailey Totten and Braylon Lenkner at No. 1 doubles and Teddy Crawhorn and Jayson Music at No. 2 doubles went 0-2.

Knights blank Eagles

BRAZIL — Northview won four matches in straight sets and took No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles by forfeit in a 5-0 WIC win against Brown County.

Owen East fell to Christian Roembke 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Trevor Shields lost to Drew Cook 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the Eagles (1-3, 0-2). Jack Sichting and Sawyer Gore fell to Caden Schrader and Hunter Johnson 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

North takes seventh

GREENWOOD — Columbus North finished seventh out of 18 teams in the Center Grove Invitational with a 352 at Hickory Stick. Top-ranked Carmel won with a 290, while Center Grove Red edged Westfield 299-302 for second.

Ava Bunker finished eighth individually with a 3-over-par 74 to lead the Bull Dogs. Lindsey Hartwell added a 91, Erin Hopkins shot 92 and Ritisha Rashmil had a 95.

Olympians shoot 175

CORYDON — Columbus East finished with a a 175 in the Floyd Central Invitational, which was shortened to nine holes because of rain.

Carter Gant led the Olympians with a 39 at Old Capitol. Katie Hong carded a 43, Grace LaSell added a 46, Dyana Foster shot 47 and Ali Trueblood had a 60.

Eagles take fifth

JASPER — Brown County finished fifth out 11 teams in the Jasper Invitational with a 430 at Buffalo Trace. Gibson Southern won with a 351.

Lilly VanNess led the Eagles with a 97. Hannah deWeerdt added a 99, Savannah Poling and Ava Stogsdill each shot 117 and Chloe Poling had a 129.

BOYS SOCCER

East drops pair

GREENWOOD — Columbus East lost a pair of games in the Center Grove Classic, falling to Class 3A No. 11 Elkhart 4-0 and 3A No. 12 Center Grove 4-1.

Aarav Nihalani scored the goal off an assist from Gui Silva Coehlo for the Olympians (0-3) against Center Grove. Pete Coriden posted five saves.

Chargers top Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County opened its season with a 3-1 WIC loss to North Putnam.

Carter Norcutt scored the Eagles goal off an assist from Ethan Scott. Merrick Reeves recorded six saves.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Teams compete at BC

NASHVILLE — Brown County’s Chase Austin won the boys race in 16 minutes 10.25 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles), and Jennings County (113) finished fifth, Brown County (114) took sixth and Columbus East (215) was seventh at the Brown County Harrier Classic.

Kraedyn Young led the Panthers with a seventh-place finish in 17:03.53. Eli Wahlman took 12th (17:14.16), while Noah McFall was 31st (18:24.03), Dawson Leak 40th (18:45.77) and Zachary Wahlman 42nd (18:49.19).

For the Eagles, Charlie Webb finished 32nd in 18:26.76, while Rafe Silbaugh was 34th (18:27.97), Case Smith 41st (18:47.39) and Kai Koester 46th (19:03.29).

The Olympians were led by a 43rd-place finish from Jackson Brookes in 18:55.16. Jacob Peeples took 56th in 19:26.11, while Cayden Lynott was 71st (19:56.70), Lorren Westerfeld 73rd (20:06.84) and Derek Patchett 77th (20:10.73).

East’s girls finished sixth with 162 points. Chloe Krueger took 23rd in 21:37.72, while Madison Swartzentruber was 38th (22:46.06), Riley Carothers 50th (23:81.88), Victoria Cuhadar 54th (23:53.75) and Amelia Fay 68th (24:47.56).

Brown County had four girls runners, one short of the number needed to score as a team. Hadley Gradolf finished fifth in 19:24.18, while Sadie Hiatt was 47th (23:11.46), Megan Cumberledge 59th (24:10.40) and Livie Austin 77th (25:25.16.

FOOTBALL

Lancers topple Tindley

EDINBURGH — Caleb Murphy and Caleb Dewey connected on two touchdown passes Friday to lift Edinburgh to a season-opening 14-6 win against Indianapolis Tindley.

The Murphy-to-Dewey scoring passes covered 19 and 42 yards. The Lancers added a safety late in the third quarter.

Jarrett Turner and Dewey had interceptions, and Keegan Smith recovered a fumble.

Knights blank Panthers

AURORA — Jennings County opened its season with a 28-0 loss at South Dearborn on Friday.

Sam Burkman was 7-of-16 passing for 56 yards. Nate Doty ran for 60 yards on 11 carries, and Matt Hines added 52 yards on 16 carries.

Branden Braun caught three passes for 18 yards. Austin Byford had one catch for 18 yards.

Eagles drop opener

NASHVILLE — Owen Valley jumped out to a 56-7 halftime lead and went on to post a 77-7 win Friday at Brown County.

The Eagles’ touchdown came on an 11-yard pass from Noah Lewis to Ben Wagler in the second quarter. Ethan Spiece kicked the extra point.

Lewis completed 6 of 9 passes for 36 yards, and Wagler caught five passes for 25 yards. Brown County was held to minus-31 yards rushing.

Ollie Normile recorded five tackles, and Brady Bond had an interception to lead the Eagle defense.

Chargers top Cougars

GREENSBURG — Class A co-No. 9 North Decatur opened the season with a 57-0 win at South Decatur.

The Chargers led 37-0 after one quarter and 51-0 at halftime.
