While two girls did most of the scoring for Columbus North on Monday night, the rest of the Bull Dogs provided key plays, and that’s what pleased coach David Young the most.
Young was especially thrilled that his seniors were able to play a major role on senior night in North’s 10-1 victory against Franklin.
“Senior Night is always fun, getting players on the field that maybe aren’t starters,” Young said. “A lot of what we do the last four years as a group and team bonding, the girls want to go out and perform for their seniors, and that’s what we saw today. We played as a group and as a team, and we scored as a team. There were lots of people involved.”
Sophomore Page Mora, a transfer from Seymour, scored her first four goals as a Bull Dog. She netted North’s first goal in the 16th minute, then added three more after halftime, the last two coming less than a minute apart midway through the second half.
“A lot of it was my teammates helping me,” Mora said. “It wasn’t just me. It’s really special (to win for the seniors). We were looking forward to it.”
Lauren Barker
One of those seniors, Lauren Barker came through with three goals and two assists. Barker scored the Bull Dogs’ third goal in the 25th minutes, their sixth goal in the 50th minute and their ninth goal in the 68th minute.
Izzy Lynn netted North’s second goal in the 22nd minute, and Rachel Merritt had the fourth goal in the 30th minute. The Grizzly Cubs scored their only goal in the 39th minute to cut the lead to 4-1 at halftime.
The final goal for the Bull Dogs (2-1-1) came in the 70th minute from senior center back Riley Schumm, who moved up top to score her first goal of the season.
Barker also had two assists. Amelia Corney, Maddi Rutan and Dafne Avila all added one assist.
North outshot Franklin 35-6, putting 21 shots on goal to three for the Grizzly Cubs. Mallory Gilley posted three saves for the Bull Dogs, who did not give up a shot in the second half.
Barker now has eight goals in four games for North, which hosts Columbus East on Wednesday night.
“It was a lot of fun, but all the credit to my teammates for getting me the ball in the right places and lifting each other up,” Barker said. “It was just a lot of fun to score a lot of goals with these seniors. I love this group. It’s been great.”
