North to honor 2012 state soccer champs at tonight’s game vs. East

Columbus North celebrates with the Class 2A boys soccer state championship trophy after defeating Warsaw 1-0 Oct. 27, 2012 at Michael A. Carrol Track and Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis.

When Columbus North won the Class 2A boys soccer state championship in 2012, the Bull Dogs reached a level that coach Andy Glover is looking to find in his current team.

Tonight, members of that 2012 North squad will be honored at the Bull Dogs game against Columbus East. Glover is hoping that team can share some of their methods with this year’s players.

“It’s going to be a wonderful experience,” Glover said. “We have a lot of kids that will return, and they serve as a fine example for our team here who is trying to constantly find what their ceiling is, too. That is a team that worked hard to find their ceiling, and they reached the pinnacle, and they bring the mindset that we want to expose our team to.

“So we’re very excited to not only see them back in town and celebrate with their families and recognize their accomplishment, but let them have a word with our team here to maybe recalibrate things a little bit and adjust the mindset to set set the bar a little bit higher as far as expectation goes,” he added.

The JV game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at around 7:45 p.m.

Barker cited for good sportsmanship

Columbus North’s Lauren Barker netted three goals and two assists on her senior night in Monday’s 10-1 win against Franklin, but it was a goal that was called off that earned her a commendation from the referee.

Lauren Barker

In his report to the IHSAA, the referee wrote:

“Lauren, being a huge competitor and the best player on the field, during her senior night game against Franklin Community, showed the highest form of sportsmanship. During the game, North was winning 4 to 1 when a play materialized in the box and one of her teammates shot it…per the (assistant referee) and myself it looked like it hit the post and came back to the player, who then took another shot and scored. However, Lauren came to me and said that the ball was out of bounds because it had hit both the post and the wheel (on the side of the net) then coming back into play. She said it was the right thing to do, and then apologized to her teammate for taking a goal away from her.”
