Columbus firefighters work at the scene of a garage fire early Tuesday morning.

Columbus firefighters said a detached garage behind a business at 823 12th St. was destroyed in a fire at 12:17 a.m. Tuesday.

The Beauty Room Salon reported the fire in the garage behind the business, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

When firefighters arrived, they found the garage in flames with fire extending to two privacy fences near the building. Radiant heat from the fire was causing vinyl siding damage to an adjacent property, Wilson said.

Due to the amount of items inside the garage, the fire was well advanced upon the arrival of firefighters, Wilson said. With signs of structural instability, firefighters did not enter the building while fighting the fire. The fire consumed a significant amount of the structural building materials which led to a collapse of the remaining walls and roofing structure. The property owner told firefighters that the garage was used for storage of property.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damages from the fire are estimated at approximately $30,000. The garage is considered a total loss. No injuries were reported at the scene, Wilson said.
