Panthers slip past East

Jennings County pulled out close wins at both doubles spots to claim a 4-1 victory at Columbus East Monday in the opening round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament.

Owen Law beat Erik Takahashi 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Parker Bales blanked Ethan Kirk 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the Panthers (13-6). Jennings’ Justin Ramey and Ryan Schuck topped Matthew Degner and Ethan Bumbalough 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and Alex Leach and Ty Zohrlaut defeated Tyler Ernst and Henry Ulrich 7-6 (1), 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

The point for the Olympians (6-13) came at No. 3 singles, where Jacob Dettmer beat Janne Sebastian 6-1, 6-0.

Tigers blank Jets

HOPE — Triton Central won all five matches in straight sets in a 5-0 win against Hauser.

Caleb Wallace fell to Tucker Hutchinson beat 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Jackson Burcham lost to Avram Rund 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Hagan Wiedersatz fell to Cole Thomas 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Jets (4-11).

Hauser’s Levi Gollmer and Hunter Pappano lost to Griffin Sego and Ben Toth 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Jentzen Bechtel and Kameron Blair fell to Oliver Gearlds and Joey Brosnon 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Tiger Cubs top Eagles

NASHVILLE — Greencastle won one match in three sets and another by forfeit in a 4-1 Western Indiana Conference win at Brown County.

Jon Kirchhofer and Trevor Shields scored the point for the Eagles (3-12, 1-6) with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Justin Evans and Dorian Dowd at No. 1 doubles.

Brown County’s Jack Sichting fell to Eli Callahan 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Owen East lost to Jay Glotzbach 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) at No. 2 singles. Sawyer Gore and Brandon Saechao fell to Paul Lewis and Andrew Adams 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

North falls to Panthers

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North ran into one of the state’s top teams and dropped a 3-0 Conference Indiana decision at Class 3A No. 10 Bloomington South.

The Bull Dogs fell to 5-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.

VOLLEYBALL

Cougars edge Jackets

GREENSBURG — South Decatur picked up its first Mid-Hoosier Conference win of the season, a 15-25, 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 16-14 victory against Morristown.

The Cougars improved to 10-10 overall and 1-4 in the MHC.
