Nick Mumley

Nick Mumley, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Columbus, Indiana passed from this life on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at 7:29 a.m. surrounded by his loving family at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Nick was born on January 26, 1937, in Wheeling, West Virginia the son of Nicholas and Mary Mihalovich Mumley, Sr. On August 16, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart Vivian “Sue” F. Mudge Mumley.

Nick and Vivian attended Wheeling High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He was selected as West Virginia’s Mr. Basketball in addition to later being inducted into the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference’s Hall of Fame. Nick attended Purdue University and graduated in 1958 where he played football as a tackle. He was selected by the International News Service in 1957 for the College Football All-America Team. He was 51st overall pick in the 1959 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, and traded to the New York Titans (later known as the New York Jets) in the American Football League. After the 1962 season Mr. Mumley retired from professional football to spend more quality time with his young family. He then went on to work for Reis Equipment Company and for the Kroot Corporation as Sales Director. He was a member of the NFL Players Association, John Purdue Club and member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus.

Nick was a huge sports fan, especially football and was a diehard Purdue football fan and long time season ticket holder. He cherished spending time with family and close friends.

Survivors include his daughters, Tamara (Mike) Mumley Sorg of Fort Wayne and Jody (Tony) Mumley VanArsdale of Eagle, Colorado; grandchildren, Brittany (Brandon) O’Brien Sorg Runyon of Evansville, Evan Michael Sorg and Jacob Nicholas Sorg of Fort Wayne; and one great granddaughter, Bailey Renee Runyon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Vivian “Sue” F. Mumley on December 30, 2003.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 4:30-6:30p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home at 1029 Washington Street in Columbus.

In keeping with Mr. Mumley’s wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2022, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Howard Boles officiating. Inurnment will follow at Garland Brook Cemetery. There will be a visitation beginning one hour prior to the service.
