READY FOR SOME SCARES: Ghosts and goblins are set for a night of Halloween treats

Carla Clark | For The Republic People line up for refreshments at the Donut Central truck during the Fall-o-ween event at the Bartholomew County Public Library in Columbus, Ind. Wednesday, October 26, 2022.

Gobs of goblins could be wandering tonight — and plenty of sweet, costumed little ones seeking their own share of sweet treats.

And if Linus is right, who knows — maybe even the Great Pumpkin will rise from the pumpkin patch and … well, never mind.

Columbus has announced that trick-or-treat hours will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today.

Hope’s hours are 6 to 8 p.m., according to officials.

Residents wishing to share treats with trick-or-treaters should leave their outside light on.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution when driving, since there will be increased pedestrian traffic during this time.

Parents and any other adults supervising youngsters’ Halloween rounds should make sure that children’s costumes and masks allow for unobstructed vision and easy mobility.

Here are some additional safety tips from law enforcement to keep everyone safe tonight while collecting the candy.

— When heading out, don’t forget the flashlight and in advance, put some reflective tape on the costumes to increase visibility. Some retailers are offering glow-in-the-dark pumpkin containers that kids can carry to further increase visibility.

— Face paint is safer than masks that cover a child’s face, as the mask can limit a child’s ability to see. Make sure your child won’t trip on their costume.

— Check the shoes and make sure your child is in comfortable and secure, as some sidewalks have cracks or other dangers that aren’t easily seen at night.

— Pay extra attention at intersections and when crossing streets as motorists could be distracted with children running about.

— Once you get back home, check over the candy carefully and discard anything that isn’t in its original, undamaged packaging. Just throw away anything that looks suspicious.
