Martin U. grant to aid future African American Arts Alliance

INDIANAPOLIS — Martin University is a recipient of a $500,000 grant from the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation. The funds will support renovation of the Dr. A.J. Brown Building, which will house the soon-to-be created African American Arts Alliance of Indianapolis at Martin University.

“We are grateful for the generosity of the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation that will give us the much-needed funds to renovate the Dr. A. J. Brown Building on our campus,” said Martin University President Sean Huddleston.” We will then welcome the African American Arts Alliance of Indianapolis at Martin University that will be created next year and occupy the building.”

“The African American Alliance of Indianapolis at Martin University will attract students throughout the region to come to our city and study the rich culture we have to share,” said Dr. Kristie Johnson, vice president of institutional advancement. “This would not have been possible without understanding the importance of the Alliance and financial assistance by the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation.”

Funds are earmarked to assist with a new roof, window replacement, HVAC system upgrades, masonry upgrades, office space renovation and new paint and carpeting.

As Indiana’s only predominantly Black institution of higher education, Martin University’s mission is to educate and develop diverse workforce-ready students in an inclusive, supportive, and collegiate environment.
