City awards bids on trail projects

The city of Columbus has approved contracts for two bicycle and pedestrian trail projects and is reviewing bids on a third.

The Columbus Board of Works approved awarding contracts for the Mill Race Trail and the Rocky Ford Road and Marr Road Trail.

Milestone Contractors was awarded the Mill Race Trail project with a bid of $338,369. All-Star Paving was approved for the Rocky Ford Road and Marr Road Trail with a proposal of $176,351.

“One of the projects was slightly above the estimate,” said City Engineer and Executive Director of Public Works Dave Hayward. “The other one was slightly below, so they balance out, and they’re both within the budget that we have available.”

Assistant City Engineer Andrew Beckort said at a previous meeting that the Mill Race Trail project will involve work in Mill Race Park from Third and Lindsey Street to Carle Miske Drive to improve the trail and make it a safer alternative to crossing Third and Lindsey.

The Rocky Ford Road and Marr Road project, on the other hand, will relocate a People Trail under the Rocky Ford Bridge.

Work on the two projects will begin in 2023, said Hayward.

The Board of Works also opened bids for a shared use path that will run along the north side of Rocky Ford from Washington Street to Central Avenue. Dave O’Mara was the low bidder with $793,000. Milestone bid $860,650, and All-Star Paving bid $890,436.75.

The board voted to take these bids under advisement.
