Scipio man arrested after stolen rifle found in his vehicle

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus police officers arrested a Scipio man on several charges Wednesday evening after a stolen rifle was located in his vehicle during a traffic stop. Shortly before 6 p.m., CPD officers stopped a vehicle driven by Jesse D. Taylor, 37, of
Scipio near Second Street and California Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

During the traffic stop, officers observed an “AR-15 style” rifle in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. The officers secured the weapon and determined a short time later that the firearm was reported stolen out of Jennings County, Harris said. The officers also determined that Taylor was prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous convictions for armed robbery and domestic battery.

Taylor was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded on the following preliminary charges:
–Possession of a firearm by a convicted serious violent felon
–Possession of a firearm by a convicted domestic batterer
–Theft of a firearm
–Possession of marijuana
