Scrapbook local sports roundup: Club Olympia swimmers help Indiana win Mid States

Team Indiana took the top spot in combined men’s and women’s scoring in the closely contested 2023 Mid States All Star Championships this past weekend hosted by Indiana Swimming at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.

The annual swim meet gathers the top-four best 14-and-under swimmers for each contested event from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Kentucky and Minnesota to compete against one another as part of their state teams. Team Indiana totaled 3,288 points, giving it the top spot over Ohio (3,152.5 points), followed by Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin and Kentucky.

Team Indiana included Club Olympia swimmers Joshua Pendleton, Tony Machavariani and Connelly Furnish. Pendleton led the local contingent with six events and two relays in the 11-12-year-old boys division, where he placed second in both the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650 (mile) freestyle, third in the 200 Freestyle and seventh in the 100 butterfly while also contributing to the second-place finishing 200 freestyle relay and third-place 200 medley relay team.

Machavariani, competing in the 10U boys division, placed second in the 50 backstroke and 100 individual medley, fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle, while helping Team Indiana to wins in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays.

Furnish competed in the 1,650 (mile) freestyle in the 13-14 girls division, where she claimed an 11th-place finish.

HOCKEY

Icemen go 1-2

The Columbus Icemen Varsity fell to CIK 5-0 and Evansville Purple 1-0 and beat Zionsville 4-3 last week.

Carter Green and Alex Clark each netted one goal and one assist for the Icemen. Caleb McGhehey and Dane Weinzapfel each scored one goal and Will Kushner, John Merritt, Cole Finney and Caden Graham all had one assist. Jake McMullen was in net against CIK and Zionsville, and Ben Blanz was in net against Evansville.

Flames 14U A split with Evansville, falling 4-2 and winning 4-3. Will Jamerson recorded four goals and one assist, Ashton Nguyen scored two goals, Sawyer Patterson had three assists and Grace Wallace added one assist. Lane Barringer was in net.

BROOMBALL

MOR takes first loss

CCA handed Monsters of Rock its first loss in the Columbus Broomball League, a 3-1 decision. Greg Thomas scored two gaols, and Todd Houchin added one for CCA (5-3). Zach Henderson had the goal for Monsters (7-1).

Hansons (6-2) edged Toyota Tsunamis 3-2 on goals from Rahul Bhardwaj, Erik Spilling and Dave VanValkenburg. Dalton McNealy and Greg McNealy scored for Tsunamis (1-7).

Our Name Is Earl beat Jennings County BC 7-4. Darren Eckerly and Beth Lutz each netted two goals, and Gabe Marsh, Tom Kareus and Ellie Lutz all had one goal for Earl (5-3). Darien Castetter scored two goals, and Skyler Mathews and Nick Hill each added one for Jennings (0-8).

BASKETBALL

Panthers, Lions split

The Jennings County Middle School and St. Peter’s girls split Thursday night, with the Lions winning the eighth-grade game 32-29 and the Panthers taking the seventh-grade contest 34-12.

Lydia Martin and Mooky Ratcliff each scored 10 points to lead the Jennings seventh-graders. Etta Young led the Panther eighth-graders with seven points.

The Jennings seventh-grade girls JV lost to Madison 39-14. Myah Owens led the Panthers with eight points.
