High school sports roundup: East sets records in runner-up finish

BOYS SWIMMING

East sets marks, takes 2nd

FLOYDS KNOBS — Columbus East set three school and two Hoosier Hills Conference meet records Saturday afternoon, but host Floyd Central slipped past the Olympians 348-298 for the team title in the boys HHC meet.

East senior Brady Beyer swam a school- and conference-record 4 minutes, 37.75 seconds inthe 500-yard freestyle and a school-record 57.65 in winning the 100 breaststroke. Judah Nickoll, Beyer, Misha Machavariani and Cavan Stilson set school and conference records in the 200 medley relay (1:38.34).

Machavariani also won the 200 individual medley (1:59.06) and 100 butterfly (54.07). Nickoll finished second in the 100 backstroke (54.54) and third in the 200 freestyle (1:48.42), Gavin Day took second in the diving competition (257.15), Todd Hundley was third in the 200 IM (2:06.35) and fourth in the 100 backstroke (57.31), Stilson finished third in the 100 freestyle (50.08), Rylan Perkins took fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.10) and Stilson, Machavariani, Nickoll and Beyer were second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:20.75).

Jennings County finished seventh as a team with 80 points. Levi Marsh took sixth in the 50 freestyle (23.47) and eighth in the 100 butterfly (58.79) to lead the Panthers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Crusaders drop pair

ELLETTSVILLE — Columbus Christian lost twice in the Southern Roads Conference Tournament, falling to Cannelton 33-28 and Bloomington Lighthouse 61-47.

Sarah Lorimor led the Crusaders (13-7) with 12 points against Cannelton and 18 against Lighthouse. Lauren Sanders added eight against Lighthouse.

Trinity tops South Decatur

SEYMOUR — Class A No. 4 Trinity Lutheran closed the regular season with an 81-49 victory against South Decatur.

Bailey Tabeling led Trinity (18-6) with 27 points. Madison Keith scored 21, and Liza Froedge and Jordan Brewer each added 13.

South Decatur finished the regular season 7-14.

BOYS BASKETBALL

East falls to Cougars

BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington North jumped out to a 29-5 lead after one quarter and went on to hand Columbus East a 80-50 defeat.

Ben Sylva led the Olympians (1-14) with 17 points. Carter Patterson added a career-high 10.

Crusaders edge Legacy

Columbus Christian pulled out an 86-85 win against Legacy Christian.

Peyton Walden led the Crusaders (12-13) with 32 points. Cam Pritchard scored 19, Jordan Burton had 14 and Branson Carr added 11.

Batesville grounds Jets

BATESVILLE — Hauser was within 21-19 at halftime, but Batesville pulled away for a 58-49 victory.

Ledger Gelfius led the Jets (7-9) with 19 points. Kam Blair scored eight, and Taeshaun Tungate added seven.

Panthers down Spartans

CONNERSVILLE — Class 4A No. 9 Jennings County jumped out to a 26-13 halftime lead and cruised from there to a 51-38 win at Connersville.

Lane Zohrlaut led the Panthers (15-1) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Carter Kent scored 11 points, and Owen Law, Keegan Manowitz and Justin Ramey all added seven points.

Lancers rally for win

HENRYVILLE — Edinburgh rallied from a third-quarter deficit to pull out a 63-56 win at Henryville.

Connor Ramey led the Lancers (11-5) with 16 points. Jarrett Turner scored 14, Caleb Dewey had 11 and Jackson Hartwell added seven.

Tigers tame Cougars

FAIRLAND — Triton Central jumped out to a 39-25 halftime lead and went on to hand South Decatur a 83-51 defeat.

Dale Peters led the Cougars (8-9) with 14 points. Jacob Scruggs scored 13, and Dorian Hacker added nine.

Olympians finish sixth

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus East finsihed sixth as a team with 90.5 points in the Bloomington South Invitational.

Cami Warren placed fourth on the vault (8.85), sixth on the floor (9.15) and 10th on the bars (7.7) on her way to a sixth-place finish in the all-around with a 33.4.
