Two Columbus residents with felony warrants were arrested after a lengthy vehicle pursuit early Monday morning, Columbus Police said.

At about 1:10 a.m., a Columbus police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation near 17th and Maple streets. The driver of the vehicle, who was later identified as Chester D. Sidwell, 58, of Columbus, refused to stop and began travelling at a high rate of speed, police said. Sidwell reportedly disregarded a number of traffic control devices as the pursuit continued out of the city limits and reached speeds of more than 100 mph, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The pursuit eventually entered Jennings County where Sidwell’s vehicle struck a tire deflation device on State Road 7 near the Scipio Fire Station. Sidwell’s vehicle came to a stop on Jennings County Road 300N, where officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop concluding the 40-minute pursuit.

Sidwell and his passenger, Amber N. David, 37, of Columbus, were taken into custody. Both were placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail.

Sidwell was remanded on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle (level 6 felony), misdemeanor counts of driving while suspended with a prior conviction, criminal recklessness and reckless driving, as well as a Bartholomew County warrant.

David was remanded on two Bartholomew County warrants, police said.

According to Bartholomew County online court records, Sidwell was wanted on a Level 4 felony count of possession of methamphetamine and a warrant issued for his arrest after he failed to appear at a change of plea hearing in October.

David had been charged with felony possession of a syringe and misdemeanor counts of resisting law enforcement and possession of paraphernalia, online court records show.

In September, she was sentenced to one year of probation after pleading to the resisting count and the other charges were dropped, but a warrant was issued in December after the state petitioned to revoke her probation.

The Jennings County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrests.
