Veron Thompson

COLUMBUS

Veron Thompson, 69, of Columbus, passed away on February 11, 2023, at IU Methodist Hospital. He was born on July 4, 1953, to Fred Thompson, and Frankie Belle Webb Thompson in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Veron married Karen Torrey on May 1, 1999. Together, they purchased their dream farm in May 2012 for training, hunting, and raising their Spinone Italiano, a Versatile Gundog. Veron centered his life around Karen, his stepson, Luke, and their dogs. Veron had a passion for hunting deer and filling up his freezer with venison. One of his favorite hunting pastimes was looking for mushrooms every spring. He and some buddies, over the years, made many trips to Michigan, in search of and anticipating the motherlode of Morel mushrooms, which usually ended in success. Then, there was dove hunting, once again with his buddies, and oh, those memories are not to be forgotten. Regardless of the hunts, they always seemed to turn from one crazy turn of events to another, especially when he spent those times with his friends. A lifetime of memories for sure, for all involved. During Veron’s later years, he spent most of his hunting days training, hunting quail, pheasant, and waterfowl with his Spinone Italiano hunting dogs. He loved and catered to all his beloved Spinoni: Jorja, Ruby, Morghen, Macho, Arthur, Opal, Esther, and Garnet. Rocco, Furba, and Tia will be the first to greet him on the other side. Whether he was outside working, tending his garden, or sitting on the couch, they were always at his side.

Veron had a big green thumb and he loved gardening. He grew about every vegetable out there and made sure to raise plenty to share with friends and neighbors who happened to come by or had Luke hand deliver to the ones close to us. When you walked into Veron and Karen’s house, much of the time, you would find Veron in the kitchen cooking up something to share. Veron was a gift that kept on giving.

After High School in 1972, Veron attended Indiana State. He then went to work for Arvin, (Faurecia) and retired from there in 2010. Several years later, he went back to work for Cummins until 2020.

Veron is survived by his wife, Karen D. Torrey Thompson; sons, Paul Slater Thompson, Luke Stoner, and Matthew (Kaley) Stoner; sisters, Patricia (Kevin) Johnson, Cheryl (Terry) Parker, Elaine (Max) Baute; grandsons, Aleksander, Cassius, Benjamin, Abram, and Elam; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred, and Frankie Thompson.

No services are planned for Veron, at this time. A celebration of life will take place in the weeks to come. You are invited to leave a condolence message to the family or light a virtual candle of remembrance online at www.jewellrittman.com.
