Jennings Girl Scout’s service rewarded with top honor

A new swing for disabled children at Sand Creek Elementary School in North Vernon was among the community service projects for which Zoey Stroup of North Vernon was honored with the Gold Award from Girl Scouts.

NORTH VERNON — A Jennings County High School sophomore recently received the highest award presented by Girl Scouts.

Zoey Stroup earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award on March 7, highlighting her many hours volunteering and serving her community.

For more than 2½ years, Zoey led an effort to that included nearly 1,000 hours to put in a handicap swing that can be used by students at Sand Creek Elementary School in North Vernon.

That’s just part of her volunteer efforts, which have exceeded 2,000 hours. Last summer, she volunteered to cleaning veterans’ grave markers at Vernon Cemetery, and she also has collected hats and gloves for an annual holiday season drive over the past five years for anyone who needs them.

Zoey was in Girl Scouts as a Daisy and Brownie for four years in Jennings County, but when there was no troop locally, she joined Bartholomew Girl Scouts as a Junior Girl Scout with Troop 3060. She has been in that troop for seven years and is in her second year as a senior girl scout.
