Marcella Smith

NASHVILLE

Marcella Smith, 80, of Nashville, Indiana, went to be with our Lord and Savior early in the morning on Friday, March 17th, 2023, at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus. Marcella was born January 14, 1943, in Boonville, Indiana, to Ernest and Aline Spencer.

Marcella joined the US Air Force in the early 1960s. She always felt honor and reflected proudly on her time serving the United States military. Marcella later served in the Indiana National Guard, welcoming the additional opportunity to continue to answer the call of service on behalf of her country. She was also a long-time member of the American Legion.

Marcella worked for many years at Sears and Roebuck in Columbus and Bloomington before her retirement. She was known to many as a spirited maverick, gutsy and undaunted. She was also a stalwart friend, bountiful and unstinting in her support to those who were fortunate to call her their confidant.

Marcella enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as pets and stray animals in need of food and shelter. In addition, she enjoyed listening to music – particularly Aretha Franklin and country-and-western tunes. Along with music, she loved relaxing with a good film, notably the lighthearted romantic comedies of Doris Day and Rock Hudson.

Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl (James) Smith Cook; her grandchildren, Taylor Anderson and Brandon Smith; great-grandchildren, Evan Anderson and Luke Anderson; sibling Terry (Tammy) Moore; and nieces and nephew. Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Marlene Foreman; her brother-in-law, Jeff Foreman; and by her much beloved son, Dean Smith.

The family would like to give special thanks to the caring staff at Columbus Regional Hospital, as well as to Pastor Michael Snider and his wife, Kay; and to Marcella’s long-time friends, Anne, Brenda, and Phyllis. Marcella was preceded in death by her dear friend, Val Winkle.

A private scattering of ashes will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made in Marcella’s memory to the Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary (https://ofsds.org/) or Sprunica Baptist Church, 3902 Sprunica Rd., Nashville, IN, 47448.
