East routs Cougars
Columbus East pounded out 20 hits Thursday in rolling to an 11-2 win against Bloomington North.
Maryn Mayes went 4 for 4 with three RBIs for the Olympians (2-0). Kaylee Cole went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Savanna Sullivan went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and Kenzie Foster went 3 for 4 with a triple.
Hermione Robinson went 2 for 4 and threw a seven-hitter, allowing only one earned run.
Panthers edge Braves
NORTH VERNON — Jillian Brauer capped a three-run seventh with a walkoff RBI-single to rally Jennings County to a 4-3 win against Brownstown Central.
Riley Byford went 2 for 3, and Brauer went 2 for 4 for the Panthers (2-1). Kenzie Matern threw a four-hitter and allowed only one earned run.
Warriors top Lancers
WHITELAND — Edinburgh outhit Whiteland 7-3, but the Warriors rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 5-2 win.
MacKenzie Bieker went 2 for 3 with a double and threw a three-hitter for the Lancers (1-3).
TRACK AND FIELD
Jet boys take second
AURORA — Hauser’s boys opened the season with a second-place finish in a tri meet at South Dearborn.
South Dearborn won the boys meet with 87 points to 51 for the Jets and 26 for South Ripley. South Dearborn took the girls meet with 92 points to 60 for South Ripley and 13 for Hauser.
Colin Kistler won the 1,600 meters (5 minutes, 10.55 seconds) and 3,200 (10:56.63), and Cameron Toole took the 400 (55.11) and 200 (23.71). Luke Bruner captured the discus (116 feet, 11 inches).
BASEBALL
Eagles slip past Lancers
NASHVILLE — Brown County used a three-run fifth to rally for a 5-3 win against Edinburgh.
Jade Wollems and Gavin Butcher each went 3 for 3 with a double for the Eagles (1-0). Jack Sichting and Logan Weis combined on a seven-hitter.
Jared Myers went 2 for 4 with two doubles and did not allow an earned run in pitching a complete game for the Lancers (0-2).
Phantoms attack Panthers
NORTH VERNON — West De Pere (Wisconsin) jumped out to a 9-1 lead after three innings and held on for a 12-7 win at Jennings County in the Panthers’ season opener.
Keegan Manowitz went 2 for 3 with a double for Jennings. Sam Burkman went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Braves nip Cougars in 8
BROWNSTOWN — South Decatur led its season opener 5-1 going to the bottom of the seventh, but Brownstown Central scored four to tie it, then one in the eighth to pull out a 6-5 extra-inning victory.
The Cougars outhit the Braves 7-4. Avery Seegers went 2 for 5. Devin Pate threw five shutout innings, allowing only two hits.
