Two Columbus North High School students will travel to Florida this weekend to participate in an international competition centered on business skills.

Senior Avery Stults and junior Siddhant Jain will compete at the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) International Career Development Conference, which is being held in Orlando from Saturday to April 25.

“DECA is a business centered club that allows students to participate in a variety of business specific competitions based on topics and information that they learn in both their classes at North and by studying on their own,” explained North teacher and DECA advisor Brian Campbell.

In March, 16 students from North attended the DECA state conference in Indianapolis. Stults was named state champion in the Hotel and Lodging Management Series.

Also, in a first for the school, Jain was elected to a state officer position. He will serve as vice president of marketing for the Indiana’s state officer team, meaning it is his responsibility to promote and represent the state organization wherever possible.

Additionally, four North students earned proficiency medals at state, meaning they scored 85% or higher on their business event exams.

“The students have worked really hard this year, so to have Avery Stults as a state champion in Hotel and Lodging is incredible,” said Campbell. “It is well deserved for her, as she truly represents what it means to compete in a DECA event. Plus, to have Columbus North’s first ever elected state officer in Sid Jain, it just highlights how dedicated and hardworking these students truly are.”
