Lee Barton “Bart” Stines, a loving father, grandfather, and companion, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2023, in Nashville, Indiana. Born on July 15, 1926, in Ellettsville, Indiana, Bart was a proud and dedicated family man.
Bart was known as “Pop” to his children, Mark (Karen) Stines and Jennifer (Robert) West; two step-sons, Gary (Mary) Hedrick, David (Marianne) Hedrick. He was a doting “grandpa” to six grandchildren, Andy Lortz (Brooklyn Souders) , Lindsey Lortz (John Munden), Kevin Carroll, Molly (Sean) Clare, Stephanie (Richard) Davis, and Kelly (Matthew) Stobbe; and “Pap Lee” to ten great-grandchildren and fourteen great-great-grandchildren and he was a loving companion to Norma Lienhoop.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Roy Stines; mother, Loyce Ethel (Everman) Stines; two brothers, Earl and Glen; and two sisters, Louise Kompst and Ruth Miller.
Bart graduated from Ellettsville High School in 1944 and was drafted into the United States Army during World War II shortly after graduation. He served his country with honor and pride, and his experiences during the war shaped his strong character and resilience. After his military service, Bart embarked on a successful career at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, where he retired after 31 years. He was particularly proud of his work on the Cummins Indy Racecar in 1952, for which he did all the machine work.
Throughout his life, Bart was known for his funny, creative, and loving nature. He had a passion for fishing and spent countless hours on the water, enjoying the tranquility and challenge it provided. Bart also had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and children in general, always making time to attend their events and share in their accomplishments. His love for children extended beyond his family, as he was known to be a friend and mentor to many young people in his community. In addition to his love for fishing and family, Bart was a talented woodworker. He enjoyed creating intricate wooden ribbons for friends and family, showcasing his creativity and skill. These beautiful pieces will serve as lasting reminders of his love and dedication to those who were fortunate enough to receive them.
Bart’s life was a testament to the power of love, laughter, and perseverance. He faced challenges with grace and humor, always finding a reason to smile and make others laugh. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he created with his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Methodist Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00 am until the time of services.
